Been a long-ass time since I used an AC'97, but I think there is a sound profile called "normal" or "none" that removes all effects. Yeah, the sound effects suck hardcore.

update the drivers

i'm not sure but it might be using a realtek drive
find out the chip number and u should be ok for updating

ac97 = shitty
but if ur stuck using it, it is a pain to configure most of the time
