Id go AMD based instead...
In my opinion the only thing Intel has going for it right now is their Centrino based precessors.

and forget the 710v... with that 6600gt it looks like you're going to be doing a bit of gaming. Spend the extra few bucks for the 710/712N monitor. You will be glad you did!

oh the monitor was for the cheap system above
i'm looking into the 30" but the good resolution ones are just too expensive ~~~

i've always went w/ intel but if celeron (oopps) is gd then it's gd for that cheaper system

hm...i think ur thinkin of celeron...not centrino. centrino is for laptops. anyway, it seems like a good system. Celerons are OK. however, they really dont have that much power for their price. you can spend the extra $$$ for a Pentium 4 and get much better of a buy. I have a 2.40 GHz P4 with 1 MB of L2 cache and it is awesome. (it is currently overclocked to 2.8Ghz) also, the bus speed is a lot slower on a celeron. definitely go P4 if u can.

also, make sure u buy 2 256 MB sticks for the ram instead of one 512MB...unless if the board doesnt have dual channel. dual channel really helps especially in games. the machine performs better with dual channel due to more bandwidth in the RAM.

Otherwise, it seems like a good system.

Keep in mind: the parts may be bought at a cheaper price. My system is worth about $550 and its a P4 2.4 GHz, 1GB ram, 128MB nvidia Geforce Fx5200, DVD burner, 80GB hdd, etc.

tell your friend to save up a couple more months. everybody is unveiling new graphics cards soon so prices on the 6600s and 6800s are going to plummet as the latest generation of Nvidia's stuff comes out.
although I just got a new comp with a 6600GT (it cost around $250) and it runs Doom 3 on max detail, Half Life 2 on max detail, and Battlefield 2 on the in-game high detail option no problem. if money is an issue, then just wait a bit longer and you will save another 50 or 60 bucks you can put towards a better AMD processor (because intel is just no good).

but at $550 are those parts old? or can you buy parts of those specs brand new? i'd love to hear about where if that's the case

and i don't think the parts i picked are particularly expensive and very close to $800

well i'm not in a hurry to build my 'own' system as i don't have 2-3 grand to blow right now and my own comp's working fine, so i have lots of time to see the new gen of video cards to roll out

but for the $800 system i'm not even including one because there's one onboard and he doesn't even know what doom is
