View Full Version : Installing new O/S for friend

I have the option of installing ME or 2K pro.

I know 2000 is way better, but can I just reformat the drive (I need to reformat, their retard kids messed up the PC good). So after reformatting can I just install 2000 from the CD in DOS? Or do I make a boot disk? If it's a lot of work I'll just install ME, it's a POS but it's easy to install from DOS. Keep in mind they have nothing for their computer but the mouse, monitor and printer. I don't care about finding drivers because they have a basic setup.

I have to do it for free, so whatever is easier takes less time in their creepy house!

Answered my own question, it's already installing. If you guys want to use this thread a discussion of which O/S is better then post away.

XP Proffesional here

you will have to make a boot disk if the bios is not one to recognise the CD rom from scratch.

There is also an option to do a format from windows which will scrap everything and move to the newer OS, but thats a pain in the ass cause it rarely works properly.

Win2K and WinXP allows booting off the CD, therefore allowing a completely new clean installation.

Indeed, as does ME. Ya their HD is pretty screwed up, some really bad deleting was done! When they turn on their computer it's litterally a landslide of "Error:" "Missing shortcut" "Cannot do/find/see this". Suprisingly no occurences of "PC Load Letter" :D

I can always boot from the CD via the BIOS too.

Mac is onto it's version X os now isn't it? Anyway, though they do look cute and the one button mouse is great for the mentally handicapped, PC is the way to go. Windows sucks, but everything is made for it. And with AMD64 and 1gb Dual Channel ram, everything runs so fast that you wouldn't notice any real difference when running adobe or autocad programs on your pc.

Speaking of old OS's, does anyone here remember the "Sony HeadStart Environment"? I had it on my old 386, it was terrible!

are you saying that the PC architecture is better and that makes up for the OS? cause frankly, the PPC architecture is better then the AMD64 and OSX is better then windows. i dont see how a PC is superior in any way except for software support, which can be taken care of with virtual PC or vmware or whatever emulator you want to use.

If you really want to screw with them, why not install Linux instead? They'll never have a complaint again about crashing or any other instability issues. :nut:
