I can't decide which I prefer... The color version or the black and white conversion. What do you guys think?

I like the colour one better. The Tower is such a landmark in Calgary you can't change the look of it from the original.

Yeah, I find that I use the tubes a lot. So much in fact that my close up lens has been sitting around collecting dust, which is why I put it to use today! Hahaha!

These were taken with:
70-200L
Nikon 6T close up lens
36mm ext tube
Manfrotto 330B macro bracket
420ex
LumiQuest softbox

http://www.typicalfish.com/images/equipment/macro01.jpg

http://www.typicalfish.com/images/equipment/macro02.jpg

The second and third pics were shot at f/11, while the first was f/5.6. The flash definitely helped. I was really considering getting a macro ring flash, but just about everyone who had one said their photos looked too flat. Plus the macro bracket and flash setup was much cheaper and flexible.

I don't think the extension tube was really necessary with these photos. I probably could have done fine without it (it probably didn't even do anything). The 6T and 70-200L give so much working distance (about 2 feet?). I hadn't had a chance to try this setup together, so I just went in the backyard and fucked around with it.

I don't have a dedicated macro lens either, but I've been playing with the idea of picking up a used Sigma 105mm macro cause they pop up pretty cheap. But I'm not in any rush, since I have more than enough toys for macros for the time being.

And there I was, safe and secure in my assumption that your skillz and lighting studio were the reason. :nut: I feel so... let down.

What did you do in PS to bring out the detail so well? What really caught my attention was how clearly defined the weave of the laces were.

Well, that and the lighting. :D

Ekliptix
07-16-2005, 02:04 AM
I did play around with the lighting to get shadows and highlights where I wanted. The BG was not dark enough for my likings straight off the camera so I PS'ed that. If I had a snoot for the strobes I could have controlled the light more and done less PS.

Part of the reason the pics 'pop' so much and the detail seems so great is Sharpening in PS.

He's an angel around my wife. He's a monster around me. He jumps on me and tries to knock me over. He also used to bury the TV remote and my shoes in the snow when he was a puppy.

EK 2.0: Yes its a Hypereutectic piston out of a 350 LT1 V8. :D

He doesn't like small toys, only things that have some weight to them that he can hurl around. His other toys include a 6" diameter x 5 foot long log, an old tire, plastic milk jugs, pepsi bottles, a 2" thick rope with a rubber Kong on it, and rubber squeaky toys.
