My recomendations if you are going for more of a commercial classic rock background would include

Rolling Stones - Satisfaction, Beast of Burdon, Street Fighting Man, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Under My Thumb, Paint it Black

The Beatles - We Can Work It Out, Get Back, Hey Jude, Come Together, Helter Skelter, A Day in the Life, With a Little Help from My Friends (Hell all of Sgt. Peppers), I'm Looking Through You, Norwegian Wood

The Who - Magic Bus, My Generation, Eminence Front, Baba O'Riley, Pinball Wizard, Squeeze Box

Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick, Whole Lota Love, Tangerine, Black Dog, Stairway.... basically all of their recordings (although Physical Graffiti was a weak point)

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-7), Comfortably Numb, One of These Days, Learning to Fly, Wish You Were Here, Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 1-3), High Hopes, Hey You... once again way to many to name.... the wall is one of those essential albums that you have to own.

The Animals (with Eric Burton) - We Have to Get out of This Place, House Of The Rising Sun

Eric Clapton/Derek and the Dominoes/Cream/Yardbirds/Blind Faith - Layla, Cocain, I shot the Sherrif, White Room, I Feel Free, Spoonful, Wonderful Tonight, Let It Rain, Bell Bottom Blues, For Your Love, Over Under Sideways Down.

George Harrison - Just buy all things must pass. Great Album.

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze, Wind Cries Mary, All Along the Watchtower, Hey Joe, Manic Depression, Voodoo Child, Fire, Castles Made of Sand.

Queen - Killer Queen, Under Pressure, We Will Rock You/We are the Champions, Another One Bites the Dust, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Fat Bottomed Girls, Don't Stop Me Now, Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Ga Ga....

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, So Far Away, Walk of Life.

I will post more later as that is just the tip of the iceburg.

Pink Floyd - The whole dark side of the moon album....played together in sync with the Wizard of Oz. :P it's MESSED...but a great album.

Queen - Bohemian rhapsody. I never get tired of it. That, and bicycle race.

Guns N Roses - Sweet Child o mine....overplayed, but Slash's guitar in that song is bloody amazing (and props to Izzy for writing that shit)

Beatles - Sergeant Pepper, Lucy in the sky, I am the walrus....tons more.

The Guess who - American Women

Suggestion: If you want a great list of good rock songs, mostly old school, do a search for top 100 guitar solos of all time. You'll find a lot of what you're looking for.

I think it's Autograph.

Good picks everyone, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Van Halen yet. (oops my bad, I just saw it now in d.maczko's post). and since when was Duran Duran rock?

Benton

Duran Duran would likely fall under some form of Pop-80s-crap-rock but I have to agree with you there.

Some other bands would include

Peter Frampton - (not for everyone mind you)
Genesis (I don't think this band was mentioned somehow) - I actually like the stuff with Gabrial on the vocals and Collins behind the kit but it is pretty much all good.
Metallica
Pantera
Jethro Tull
Stevie Ray Vaughan
The Clash
The Rammones
Steely Dan
The Allman Brothers Band
The Traveling Wilburys
Neil Young/Crosby Stills Nash and Young

Thanks to Benton for reminding me:

The Traveling Wilburys

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traveling_Wilburys

While they're more folk rock than pure rock 'n' roll, the Wilburys did some fantastic music.

The members of The Traveling Wilburys were:
"Charlie T. Jnr." (Tom Petty)
"Lucky Wilbury" (Bob Dylan)
"Nelson Wilbury" (George Harrison)
"Lefty Wilbury" (Roy Orbison)
"Otis Wilbury" (Jeff Lynne)

My faves would be:
The Wilbury Twist
Dirty World
Tweeter and the Monkey Man (Yep, that's a Wilburys original!)
End of the Line
Inside Out
The Devil's Been Busy
Cool Dry Place

I don't know if I would go that far. Sting sure turned into a major wanker along the lines of Phil Collins, but when the police were together they were a great band.

Zenyatta Mondatta is one of the best albums of the 80s and Synchronicity was also a great record. The lyrics were not the deepest lyrics, but they sure blew Duran Duran out of the water in that department.

In terms of other bands The Clash and the Ramones shouldn't be ignored.
