Hi everyone!

I had a neat thought for overweight people like myself that can't bicycle to work without a little help....

...why not put a pocketbike engine on a bicycle???

Please, let's forget about the legalities of this idea, because I would really like to discuss other things related to this idea like :

is a pocketbike engine loud? are there any with electric start?
what kind of speed could you get from a bike on a flat road if the rider isn't pedalling? chain drive a good choice? could I clutch it, so that I can use the motion of the bike to start the motor, yet still be able to quickly turn it off and continue to pedal?

Too many things to write in one post....

Cheers
Tyler

I think the time it would take to do all of this and engineer the bike would be better spent on a treadmill losing weight and riding a regular bike!

Good point, I'm willing to consider this a fun do it yourself project.

Also, riding a regular bike to work will never work for me, even when I'm in better health because I'm already doing it, and it takes me about 2 hours one-way......no way in hell will this ever become practical unless I can reduce the time to about 60 minutes......even a motorized bicycle will give me an honest workout for many years to come.

well ok

I gues I have to violate my own request to avoid the legality discuss

Here's my options, are there any more that you guys can think of?

If I buy a moped, it will be very obvious, and I will need to ride it on the road with all the cellphone talking mothers in SUVs.....I don't really like this option, I'd rather have a real motorbike, but the motorbike sucks if you are trying to get a little exercise as part of the ride.

....

but if I have a mountain bike, I can ride it on the bike trails or on the street. I think the engine will make the mountian bike illegal, but most people won't suspect it because it is a mountain bike.

Additionally, if I go as far as to hide the engine inside a fake saddlebag, the only thing that will give me away is the noise.

If I clutch the drivetrain, I can actually disconnect and stop the motor whenever other bicycles are approaching......yet, engageing the motor to my drive train should start it up again.

are there any mopeds that look like a mountain bike?

no there isnt, and the guys saying 'moped' dont really get it.

real 'mopeds' are big and heavy scooters with pedals. nobody pedals a moped unless they're used to riding a bike with huge panniers.

I think what tyler is talking about is a small engine to supplement bike power.

there's a lot of aftermarket companies that use goped-style (30cc-) engines to give extra power... or they use electric motors. They typicall just use a friction drum and rest where a bike rack would normally go.

do a search on google or something, theres still gotta be tons that make them.

maybe something like..

Maybe consider electric as well, that way theres hardly any noise...

such as here (http://www.electricvehiclesnw.com/main/products.htm#ebikes)

or here (http://www.powerscoots.co.uk/acatalog/36_Volt_LE_E_Bike.html)

or up the determination and pedal your ass off....

I like this electric one, it doesn't look like it would perform as well as a gas motor, but I'm wondering if it won't attract the critical eye of CPS,
