I am looking for digital camera for work. It is to be used for visual inspections of pressure vessels, tanks, etc. I have a budget of around $1000.00.

It is often used in places where light is often very limited. I would like to have something with rechargable batteries and decent battery life.

Right now I am looking at the Nikon coolpix 8400 and the Canon powershot G6.

Currently 2 other of my coworkers are using the Nikon coolpix 8400 (several years old), and they work good for we need.

Thanks for the help.

I'm a big advocate of Canon cameras, but if you're interested in Nikon Coolpix, my friend's sister recently upgraded to a dSLR so her Coolpix 8700 is up for sale for $750.

So of the above models you would go for the Canon?

I believe the coolpix 8800 is in your price range as well.

Edit: my mistake, it's over your limit.

I would prefer something that is somewhat compact.

Have you looked at the Canon SD300/SD400's? They're sweet little cameras.

Tiny, slim build, yes. But they seriously lack a lot of manual controls.

If you're really going to max out that budget, I'd say Canon Powershot Pro 1. Otherwise, the Powershot S2 IS is really nice, well rounded camera and leaves room in your budget for accessories.
