Heres how my night starts......I get down to the grounds, get charged 12 bux to park across the street from the grounds..12 bux for parking,,,whatever. I pay 12.00 for myself and my wife to get into the grounds, some chick comes up to us and asks if we wanna buy her 55 credit card for the rides for 30 bux..i say sure, its cheaper then buying from the ticket window. So i get in line for some played out ride, while punk greesy teenagers goof off and act like assclowns. So 55 minutes later we get on the ride, so fuking unorganized. ride lasts 3.6 seconds whoooppeee....so iam like fuck this iam not waiting an hour in line for some gay ass rides. i decide to go blow my credits on games, win nothing. My wife and friends say hey lets go out for some drinks, iam like cool cold beer. we end up at cowboys, there is like 200 people on like waiting to pay 20.00 to get into a bar that anyother week cost no more then 5.00. Good news is a friend knows the doorman...i know sad, he gets is past the line, but still get raped with the 20.00 cover. we get in and there are way to many people in there, cant walk around nor really even move...Iam so sick of stampede its so played out, there is nothing really that great abhout any of it, unless your a rodeo fan. Anyone else with me on this one?

same ol same ol IMO.

after friday at the stampede all day and the stupid 2 hour wait to get into nashville north - now i remember why i haven't gone in like 5 years. and it looks like i won't be going out to another stampede for another 5 years. next year i'll just take the week off, avoid the damn crowds, avoid the stupid ass $20.00 cover charge and get out of the city instead.

I try and go every 2nd year.

Let's see, I park for 5 bucks and walk a little. I don't buy booze on the grounds, and I avoid the lame rides that don't cycle through people very quickly. Slurpees for a buck. Donuts and funnel cakes for maybe 5-10 bucks.

Rush grandstand show for what - 10 bucks? For almost 3 hours - and I enjoy it. Not the greatest show EVAR or anything, but it's something different that you don't see every day. And this years was the best one in recent memory - definately better than any of the shows on the cruise I was just on.

And then finally, avoid the crowded Stampede bars if you can't stand the cover/crowd. The fact that it's 20$ and still packed shoulder to shoulder should tell you it's not a cheap place to be. There are more bars than cowboys/coyotes/etc... the only people that deserve to gripe about it are the regulars that are there every other weekend.

I've pretty much boycotted the Stampede for close to 10 years. I don't go on any of the rides, I don't play games, I don't gamble, I don't like paying for parking, and I really prefer not to pay outrageous prices for the food.

This year was the only exception in a long while because I wanted to shoot some photos. I was only there for 2 hours and got what I needed. Didn't need to stay any longer.

It always surprises me how people get into it when the only thing that's changed about the Stampede are prices. :dunno:

I went this year to see K-OS and the Rodeo.. that's it.. I parked for free (only a couple blocks walk) so it wasn't bad.. the only thing I didn't like was the 6 dollar bud draught they sold at the Grandstand.. it tasted like shit, I ended up drinking half and gave the rest to a buddy.. I don't hit clubs anymore and I just stay away from downtown during Stampede week..

Other than that, I'd go back to the Stampede again if they have good shows next year. I don't go on rides, play the games or hit the casinos.. so it's the shows and concerts that make me want to go to the Stampede.

EDIT: Like what most say.. you pretty much pay more money to see the same shit every year.

Melinda

I enjoy the show, even if it is more or less the same every year, it is only for one week a year. It's like christmas, virtuslly the same routine and family every year, but it's awesome cause it is only once a year.

I do get into it, wear the duds, head to the grounds 2 or 3 times, get out to see the rodeo, watch the fireworks ect ect ect. Food isnt badly expensive if you know what to eat and where to find it on the grounds. There's plenty of free stuff to see and do and if things are too expensive, pack a bag with food and drinks and take the $2 LRT to the grounds. I dont get why people constantly bitch and complain. You shouldnt need beer to have a good time, no one's twisting your arm to go, and dont do the things that you seen unjustly expensive or unreasonable. Obviously the stampede is doing something right if it STILL sits in the record books as the largest outdoor show on earth. You guys all sound like hardcore cheapskates. IF IT'S TOO MUCH FOR YOU, DONT DO IT. Stop bitching!

Ya it's the same shit every year but it's the weirdos and freaks that my g/f and I go for  Take in all the free shows, buy a bag of dohnuts, fireworks etc... I park for free a few blocks away in a residential and only spend a few bucks on games to win something. I don't do rides cause it's just not worth it to me. We only spend about $50 for an afternoon/evenings entertainment. :nut: We'll go again next year.

I enjoy it.
You gotta live life a little, and if cash is that tight dont go, you have to be expecting that. I go the hat and the big belt buckle, normally I get stupid pissed before I go and make it a gong show. It only around 10 days a year, yes its costly, but you can have a good time, and like others have said there is many free things to do. This year I saw the native dancing, and watch the hoop dancers... pretty impressive, some had 12+ hoops going at one time. Its a part of Calgary. I can't wait till I can get drunk and go...

PS - I have from last year, a video of me and a buddy puding a mickey while on the zipper, and then going for the ride.
*sigh* good ol' times :nut:

ZIPPER RULES, long line, but best ride there

Its better than Klondike Days at least!

This year at Stampede I only went once, and didn't spend much, my tally this year was:

$12.00 - Entrance
$3.75 or was it $4.75 for cup of pineapple/chocolate icecream
$6.00 - Corndog (damn!!)
$2.50 - Coke
$2.00 - Birthday Game (I won a carebear!)
$20.00 - Dream Home

Parked underground at work, took train to stampede for free

$46.25 ... not bad.

- $20 on miscellaneous games
+$25 on the color game

if there's nothing great about it then don't go. everyone knows it's the same thing each year but it's the only thing to do for summer. prices there are rediculous, but consider how much it costs to rent and run a stand within the grounds.

this year i spent more then i have ever. lost about $600 in the casino and spent $1400 on the grounds over 5 days. had to dish out $25 for parking on family day because everywhere was packed.

Thaco
07-18-2005, 07:27 AM
I went on family day, took the wife and kid and this was our price rundown

parking $7
entry: free before 9
games: $20 for the kid, $10 for me (walked out with 3 prizes)
Lunch: $8 for the 3 of us for sandwiches in weedickville

we brought in our own snacks and drinks.... the kid got to play in the basement of the big four for 3 hours for free... watched the superdogs for free, watched a couple acts on the coke stage for free

so thats like $45 for 10 hours of entertainment..... cant complain... you cant even get 3 people in to a 1.5 hour movie for that price... not to mention snacks and stuff.

Nah, he doesn't have any of our asian blood in him to be cheap.

I was there on Family day bright and early to get in free! Street parking on Sundays is free all day and you can park closer than the $12 spaces. I parked at work, underground and walked 4 blocks (cheap).

If he was drinking, I bet he spent more on drinks at Cowboy's than he did at the stampede.

Haven't been to stampede for a couple years now, and didn't go this year either. Its so repetative after living in this city for most of your life.

Does it even create enough revenue for the city to continue to host it anymore? :dunno:

Over a million people through the gates in just over a week at $12 a pop? I would think just the admission alone would make it worth it, even if the rest of the stampede was free. But add all the vendors that had to pay out the ass to set up, ticket sales for the rodeo, chuckwagons, grandstand, plus all the stampede souveniers people buy. And this doesnt count all the money that the vendors or the rides/games people make, that's just for the stampede comittee. Not to mention all the people who own busiensses outside the stampede that benefit from the 'stampede sales' they hold or the incresed revenue from a buttload of tourists coming through the city. I'd think that it's still well worth it for Calgary

Yeah... so much money comes in from the vendors...
We own a restaraunt on the grounds, and we have to pay around 25% of gross sales to the stampede.....

Are you kidding? Did you not notice all the tourists the last few weeks? It brings huge $ to the city both directly, and indirectly in the form of advertising. The Calgary Stampede, as boring as it is for many locals puts Calgary on the International map.

The Calgary Stampede Formula:

Unpack all the trailers from the back 40 that have been sitting there since last July.

Have Sneek a Peek raise admission by $1 every couple of years

Have Midway come in every year with the same rides. In the contract is a clause that the rides must be repainted and renamed every few years to spice things up.

Build floats in 1990 and clean up week before stampede every year.

Have Stampede Parade and declare it as record attendence to the Media. This will be the Best Stampede Ever.

Raise admission prices every couple of years this is so A talent can be brought in.

Place all concession stands in exactly the same area as they were in previous years. Refer to aerial photos circa 1988 for location.

Use a randome shuffle to determine times of Super Dogs and other "free" entertainment.

Inflate the numbers by using staff and people who have to come in everyday so that the attendence figures are higher than last year or perhaps a new record.

Declare the current year Stamped the best ever.

Host a news conference a few day later and declare that next year will be bigger and better. In fact it will be the best ever as we will be agressivly expanding the Stampede grounds and bringing in more A talent.

REPEAT NEXT YEAR.

(feel free to add anything I missed)

I didn't think it was too bad. I parked for free at Elbow River Casino, paid $12 for admission, $15 for rush Grandstand ticket, $2.00 for a bottle of water and $4 for a corn dog (which ended making me sick). $23.50 for a couple hours of entertainment. I like walking around and looking at everything. I don't do rides so I dont' have to wait in too many lines, and I avoided the mid-way games this year, but all in all I thougth it was good.

So you spent under $100 at the Stampede, and decided that was enough money to boycott it for the rest of your life? Well I don't think they'll miss your money, but your best chances are to grab an animal loving sign and join the hippies on the side of the road.

its not the fact that i spent 100.00, cause iam not exactly hurting for money. its the fact that its very unorganized (midway) the prices keep going up, and nothing seems to get better, if anyting the stampede organizers are so concerned with how many are coming through the gates they are looking past the sloppyness of whats going on iside the grounds. Thats my opinion, just for the biggest outdoor event in the world, youd think they would be a lil more with it. Bring somehting new, always the same old shit.

Suppose I missed a few of those. However I did post first thing this morning after a 3 day weekend of partying. I was just trying to take into account the $50K payout for each Rodeo Event, the Show Homes, etc etc...

But I did leave out the Bars that cash in. I was thinking directly within the grounds.

Oh and Kenny I didn't see 1 single tourist as I wasn't within 15kms of the fair grounds once for the whole event ;) ...

Man over/under is rigged somehow. 2 years ago when I went it hit on Over almost every time and people were racking in the money like crazy. They even had to send a guy out to the ATM to get enough money to pay out people. Then suddenly there were three lines of people that were all fighting to get their money down on Over. Nothing but $50 bills on the table and then suddenly it his UNDER like 8 times in a row. Damn those Evan Stone looking Carnies.

The thing I hate most about the Stampede is how these bars start charging crazy amounts and people are so stupid they go just because "its stampede." I seriously dont know what is different from those 10 days to any other 10 days in summer. The Stampede just relies on hype for the common person, and they fall for it. Rodeo I understand (i dont like it), but everything else is just pure hype. Every year I get some stupid friend that just has to go and I end up back there in the same crowds paying the same rediculous price and doing the same boring stuff. Nashville North couldnt be more overrated.

Showhomes, lotteries, ect are all done independantly as separate charity lotteries, the stampede has very little to do with them. As far as I know, the stampede makes money so the lotteries can come in and sell their tickets, they're just like a big, popular vendor :P

Last year the stampede bumped the overall payout for the first time in years. It is one of the only $1,000,000 rodeos in the world.

I go to the Rodeo a couple times each year with clients and there are TONS of tourists there. Besides, how do you know who is a tourist and who isnt? Last time I checked most Americans looked just like us.

Personally I enjoy the atmosphere and environment that the stampede brings to downtown during the week and dont mind shelling out a few bucks for a bit of fun.

Some people go to raves for lousy music, people dressed up like idiots and overpriced water and others go to the Stampede. To each their own.

My roommate and I drove down together after my neighbor (and x-girlfriend) gave me her tickets to the grand stand show after her daughter cancelled.

perfect, we didnt want to do the grand stand but his brother & friends were there at the grounds.

We went in, parked for free and walked a ways, I went and scalped my tickets for 30bux .. spent 5 on a game and left couple hours later up $25 dollars.

I go and spend a bit, and have fun too, but I notice those things every year. Seeing the same paint chips getting bigger is a downer, but there's lots else going on to make it fun.

The way I see it at my age, I have about 2-3 years left at the Stampede before I stop going....

ps: I didn't see it this year when I went, but do they still have that Haunted House ride? The really old fucking one?? Haha good times in that thing when I was younger....

So basicaly this is a thread of people who can not have fun becuase they are better than the BUD thats served, or the cheesy prizes thats won, or the great coke stage partys that go on? Fuck people... when you get older and out go the rides there are great times to be had.,.. hell this year the thornley show put on, most people would have paid 40$+ to see... (Immigrant song cover. hell even legendboy would have liked it (if he was not there)).. Tons of fun kicking ass at the FREE games in the beer garden, K-os, ect... or the cheesy yellow mops that they sell for 15? as for the clubs, pay the 20$, and have fun, or Pay the 20$, and dont have fun.... its all up to you too actually have FUN-

This thread is kind of like those who complain about how bad our Flames have been in past years, yet don't really understand how shitty it would be if they packed up and left.

The Stampede is the greatest show on earth. No where else can you find hundreds of attractions, shows, eateries, rides, rodeos, women, gambling, and games in one place - all for the entry price of $12. Even if thats all you pay, you get a tremendous amount of value for it.

Sure, there are things that are similar each year, but thats because we live here. We take things for granted that we really shouldn't have and don't really deserve, but its here and most Calgarians realize that it is completely worthwhile.

Sam and I did our usual walk through Stampede. We missed last year so I wanted to go this year. I think it ended up being really cheap b/c we paid $2 parking, $24 admission for the both of us, $4 on the birthday game and won a turtle!!, won $25 on the color game and then another $15 or so on the over/under...so it ended up being a cheap night. Its good to just go and people watch.

FYI, cover at cowboys is $7 on thursdays and $10 every other night

well they do rape you for 12 bucks to go inside and spend even more money, cant touch the untouchable girls... have your cigarettes hustled by the touchable girls on park benches... lose 80 bux to the over-under tables, look at the lineups for rides and say fuk it and walk around :thumbsdow

on a plus note... tequila was fun afterwards.. 10$ cover, 30$ on drinks, and alot of dancing... good fun

Damn, I had no idea so many people hated it. Stampede was fine for me. Parked at western for free. So most people complaining about parking well go cry me a river, (unless you have young kids then i understand). Admission.. well some years I've paid other years I've gotten some free admission thingy thru work. Gambling at the over under table, won $80 last year, won $35 this year (didn't spend as much time there), ate good ol stampede junk food ie) corndogs blah blah.. For those complaining about how expensive it is, it always has been, i don't see why it took everyone so long to realize it's a rip off.... It's not about the food or any of that, for me its who you go with and what you do, I had fun still haha.

I love the Stampede but its to expensive to not pre-plan for. We bought our tickets for rides and games in advance at Safeway ($23.00 for 55 tickets for games or rides) and advance gate tickets at Walmart (3 people for $24.00 - $8.00 each). For $31.00 I had my admission, K-OS concert, and all the rides and games I needed covered. It was worth it to grab stuff in advance and not pay tourist prices.

I though expo was like 10x larger? It's an outdoor show???

Expo? As in Expo 86 in Vancouver?

I went there with my family when I was a kid. I dont think it counts because it isnt a yearly event. Do they even have world fairs like it anymore?

The CNE is basically the Stampede without the rodeo, chuckwagons, grandstand show, pancake breakfasts, dressing up, parade, company parties, getting drunk at 10am with your co-workers, huge parties at every bar or any local spirit and camraderie.

Whats left? Conklin rides and a bunch of smelly carnies running rigged games. Sounds fun.

I thought the original post that started this thread was hilarious, and sums up my feeling about Stampede. Calgary is a great city, full of a lot of fun people, but thank God there are other events in the summer other than the Redneck Games.

It's not the crowds and the high prices that get me though. It is the rednecks who roll into town from Hicksville, Alberta with their attitudes and their 10-gallon hats. Get some beer into them and they get loud, obnoxious and are in need of a serious beating.

I'd love to see a Redneck Posse formed next year that, thanks to the wonders of instant communication rendered possible by cellphones, could form within minutes of anyone getting grief from drunken Alberta separatist cowboy hicks so that a group of people could show up and beat them senseless. Oh, you wouldn't have to beat them too badly to render them senseless.

Yeehaw, fuck you, you separatist cowbody bastards!:D
