Well I have always thought about buying a 5.0 mustang. However i am not sure that it will happen this year.:banghead:
Just now i have been thinking about getting a cheap 1st gen rx7 and turning it into a early sunday morning back country/autocross car. I was thinking i could probley find an ok one for around 1000. Any opinions on this, is it a good idea, or should i just save up for a 5.0? I belive it is in the GS with the NA FC's

GET the rx-7. But my opinions probly a little biased since I have a 1st gen rx-7. They do make very good autocross cars and its not to hard to make them handle very very well. As for the 5.0, on my stock suspesnion and wheels I can keep up with one with very wide tires and some suspension upgrades in the bendys. There are lots of upgrades available for FB rx7's to considering how old they are. The only real limiting factor I can think of for the 1st gen is the wheel size and bolt pattern. Unless you get the 84-85 gsl-se that has 14's with a 4x114.3 bolt pattern. But they cost a lot more than $1000. So the non SE's that you would have to look at have 13 inch wheels with a 4x110 bolt pattern. Very hard to find larger wheels for these. So its just a matter of finding decent 13 inch tires. I think its a little easier if you get some R compunds though.

Good luck with whatever you end up with this summer.

Where you would get the most answers would be here:
Calgary Sports Car Club Forum (http://cscc.speedracer.ca/)
On the flip side:
There hasn't been a RX-7 that has been competitive for a while now. As well mustang parts are also cheap and contrary to what you may have been told they also handle quite well when setup.

What you should be looking for is where do you wish to compete (stock, Prepared, Mod...)?
Will this be for Solo 2 only (trailered)? What class will you be competing? How much will it cost to be competitive? - Don't forget having a fast car that handles well doesn't replace the fact that 90% is driver skill. :D

Edit: Just saw that your from Vancouver.

Well the great thing going for the RX7 right now is i could get one for cheap and if it breaks i still have a daily driver. As for the classes, i would probley start stock and move my way up. Right now i am doing everything on a budget and next year i have to save up for school too so. I dont plan on getting too crazy with this idea but doing some Solo I would probely make it way in there, but that means a cage.

Does anybody know any good 1st gen RX7 sites?

Does anybody know any good 1st gen RX7 sites? If you are looking into a first Gen RX-7 and theres a possibility of going road racing down the road, see if anyone in your area offers a Spec RX-7 class. Good, cheap way to start road racing without having to do tons to the car, and if you screw the car up its no big deal because you can get parts easily, Most Spec RX-7s would fall into the upper end of the Super Stock rules spread. The first gen RX-7 would be a good choice if you can find one in decent condition thats been looked after. Lightweight, with excellent suspension stock, decent brakes and relatively good power for such a light car. Would be a good machine to learn in. Might not be super super competitive compared to some of the other stuff in G stock, but generally your first couple of years you do more learning than winning anyways.

Go for it.

SA22 RX7 are my favorite generation. If you're going to run in stock class (which is really lots of fun IMO) I would say go for the GSL-SE if for nothing else then the LSD it comes with.

For solo1 you don't need a cage (though it is recommended), you can get away with just the harness.

Special edition non gsl-se's come with a limited slip diff. Just look for disk brakes in the rear, then it has an lsd. I'd say get a non SE becuase they are the only ones you can actually get cheap. And the the less complex carbed 12A engine will be a little easier to deal with. Now if you wanted to spend $3500 to start off with that would be a whole different stour, gsl-se all the way.
Here are some sights that might help you out:
