I've decided to change over to 3web, my customer loyalty discount is up at Telus, and its costing me $42.50 a month for measly 1.5Mbit service, with a 10 gig cap....So, I'm looking for a little advice, I'm new to the cable market! I was told by someone that the new Motorola Docsis modems cannot have usage tracked on them: myth or fact?

Next up, who uses 3web, its the shaw system so I would imagine the same modems would apply...They sell the modems for $100 bucks from 3web, but does anyone here have one to get rid of, or know anyone selling one?

Which modem is better?? The Motorola SB5100 surfboard (its older?), or the RCA DCM315R?? Both are Docsis 2.0 compatible, so speed isn't an issue.....I also heard the motorola ones are better, and judging by the rest of the motorola electronics I use and abuse on a daily basis, quality isn't an issue...

If anyone can hook me up with a software bundle from 3 web that would be cool too...
Thanks in advance....

the modems are the same, the service is just piggybacked off shaw, but i have heard nothing but horror stories from 3web customers...

also previously they could not track the docsis but they recently fixed that so they are now tracking, i know several people that have gotten usage abuse emails.

What do you wanna spend per month?

Shaw Extreme is hands down the best for residential providors under 60 bucks, IMO.

I like the <$40/month for 7Mbit connection.....I just think shaw is pricey for internet.....Still, relatively cheaper than telus considering what you're getting, but thats why I'm leaving...

im on shaw extreme via 3web, zero complaints, unless you have to call them, then prepare to be on hold. but my inet was installed good and it almost never goes down, so i dont give a fuck what the customer service is like at this point.

3web resells shaw extreme for $39.

usage on docsis 2 modems can be tracked now. 3web doesnt monitor usage. from what ive seen on various forums such as here and broadband reports, no 3web users have been dropped for being abusive yet.

i have a p2p client running literally 24/7 for probably 2 months now, not so much as a phone call or email. someone else on this forum did an experiment and leeched as much as he could (over 300gb if i remember?) and never got a call or warning. obviously there is a limit somewhere, but its clearly a lot more tolerant than shaw or any other isp.

customer service are morons. what else is new?

worth the switch, been with them close to a year now.

edit: PM me and we both get a free month :D

I did over 600GB last month as a test, and not even so much as an email.

Do you need basic cable in order to have 3Web high speed? When cable first came out we got it (kinda hush hush) without having to get cable TV, 4 years later a we were cut off (have satelite dont want cable)

Just curious if the same still applies?
