Depends. I would look for the GLX VR6 myself. Good power and sounds SOOOO good with a nice exhaust system. IF you plan to Mod...mod on the right platform, and trust me, the 2.0L is NOT the one for that generation chassis.

There's a fair amount of parts for them to make em look pretty sexy. Check out goodies from FK Automotive.

*yes, GLX, not GTX, haha, damn MK2 roots*

Dont get any 4 Cyl Jetta unless it's got the 1.8Turbo from the MK4's stuffed in there.

Do you say this because the 2.0L is slow or because it is unreliable?

Slow, and not very mod friendly.

Bullet proof motor tho. All the 2 valve per cylinder motors VW made were great, strong, resiliant, and long lasting. May not have made the most HP per liter, but they ran a long time.

we call it 2.slow , pretty reliable car, drives nicely, like the long hauls on the highway, not bad on gas and better than 1.8, way better.
VR6 would make you happier performance wise, for sure it sounds great but I'm not sure if its as reliable as 2.slow

the 4 cyl is tough block since they using it for over 30 years now, let see, water pump fits 75 rabit and 85 golf and 95 jetta and 98 audi 1.8T

its good for forced induction, early (pre 96) had forged internals,

and throwing $$ into naturally aspirated motor to get some power its not going take you anywhere, still 2.0 x-flow is better than 1.8

well which is better for mods. 2.0 or 1.8. i know for sure im not going to find any VR6 around here. if i do i will sure get my hands on it tho. a buddy of mine had a vr6 passat and also a carrado. but its going to be my first car. im not looking for amazing performance but something pretty good. i NEED 4 doors. i hate having to get outta the car whenever somebody wants to get i. so should i get a GLS or what? thanks for all the help.

Did 97 Jettas come with a 1.8 8V? Dont think so, only the 2L

1.8 is the MK4 Turbo motor.

I still think you should keep an eye out for a GLX VR6. They're not impossible to find.

Mk III 93-99

they had 1.8 8V with single injector (mono-motronic) up until 99, it was standard motor in Golfs (except GL,GTI,GLX) and in some Jettas.

Since this is going to be your first car the 2.0 will be enough, stay away from 1.8
