I've had my bed for god knows how long now and It's been flipped and shuffled so many times that the craters are not going away, so I think it's time for a new mattress.

So before I go shopping this week for a new mattress, my question is when you buy a mattress, can I buy JUST the mattress and keep the boxspring? Or do I have to buy both? I don't want to spend too much, maybe 1500 bucks max, but if I have to pay more then I don't really have a choice.

Anyway, any feedback would be appreciated... thanks.

I just got a new bed. You can keep the boxspring but just get the whole set.

I got a Queen size Serta Pillowtop mattress with boxspring and frame from Sleep Country for 950 bucks. It was a model that someone didn't like b/c the colors didn't match, so they returned it, and I managed to bargain it for cheap.

Look out for coupons at Costco. I got a queen sized bed and boxspring for $599+tax last year.

Made a huge difference for me. Takes me only 20 mins to fall asleep in it. Where as before was an hour. I only wake maybe 2-3 times now compared to 6-10 before.

Yeah mattresses are a great use of money for sure, look how much time you spend on it.

I paid 850 for a queen size sealy mattress/box spring with pocket coils and got free sheets thrown in too.

It's recommended that you buy a matching mattress/boxspring - I'm not sure if they'll honour the mattress warrenty if you don't buy the boxspring.

We bought our new mattress from sleep country. mattress was regular priced at like $1800 but they had some sort of sale there and we got ours for $1100+GST. Sleep Country has some wicked deals. Ours is the Serta something (can't remember the mattress model name) but it's queen size with the pillow top is all I can remember. Think it was 2nd or 3rd from the top model. But anyways orignally we were gonna buy the boxspring as well but the guys at sleep country mentioned it was personal preference in regards to the box spring. We could've mixed and matched and saved a few bucks that way as well but it is not a requirement when purchasing a new mattress set from those guys. IMO if there is nothing wrong with your old boxspring then don't bother. If you are a stiffler about matching colors or the boxspring is like 20 years old then buy it. The boxspring is like between $99-199 anyways - fairly cheap. It is the mattress that is big dough.

Definitely don't cheap out on mattress. Maybe when you are young you don't feel it but man did I have some back problems for awhile. Went to chiropractor thinking I messed up my back lifting something... finally thought maybe it's related to my cheap mattress.

Went to Sleep Country and bought their top of the line Serta firm pillow top (no flip ones). Wow, what a difference, no more back pain :)

I went to the Brick and Leons to check out some mattresses. They usually have some special giving you a free TV, dvd player, etc. However, I find Sleep Country has better selections and you can talk the price down quite a bit. As well you get their 60 nights guarantee which I used. I had a Sealy, than swap to a Serta.

Ariakas, yeah I just got back from Sleep Country and The Brick.. at Sleep Country I think the guy got me to sleep on probably 12 beds and just process of elimination.. so I have one set for purchase at Sleep Country I just have to actually swipe the credit card.. It's a Simmons Beautyrest that's originally 1600 bucks and they're going for just under a grand right now + tax.

I went to the brick and their cheapest one was 600 bucks, and the bed felt like crap.. the one that felt relatively good was an 800 dollar Sealy.. so I might just spend the extra 150 bucks and get the Simmons at Sleep Country.. who knows.. I'll decide in a couple of hours..

Foam Shop!!! The one on 32nd ave, right next to PM Hobbycraft.

I think it's the same as those links posted above tempurcanada.
It’s like a futon but toally different, they are very comfortable!!
Basically if you want the best comfort go for the "memory" foam. It adjusts to your body curves and your spine stays straight and all that stuff. They even have memoryfoam pillows.
The guys name is Tony (he has been in Calgary for a long time and still has a British accent lol). They can even make it custom for you.
Highly recommend these guys! We have 2 double memory foam mattresses. I'll ask pop how much he bought them from.

Hey guys, I decided to bring this from the dead... haha

Anyways, I am looking into getting a new mattress, and I doubt I can afford into the 1000's as I am a student.

Looking into the sub 1000's of course, anything around the 500's and up would be nicer. I understand with a budget like that, there isn't much nice mattresses I can get.

A little about myself, I never have problems sleeping, usually 15 mins and I am out. I currently sleep on a crappy Brick futon, the ones that can fold into a couch. I also have a crappy air bed from walmart (yes ghetto) for my res up in Edmonton. With both of these, I don't have a problem sleeping at all.

Just looking to see what people can suggest with a budget around that.

Couldn't tell you, but we're looking for a queen for our basement spare room, and I saw these guys on buysell.com, and there's a few old mattress threads mentioning them too.

I bought a queen from a foam dealer (nearby) for like 500 something.

Incredible mattress, and this wasnt even the memory foam. I went with one of their middle-range firm mattress with a softer foam topper (which made the woman happy) :D

When I went to pick it up it was shrunk-vacuum packed into something that looked like the size of a kitchen table top.... easy handling and fit in my hatchback!!!

Whatever you do, DONT cheap out on a bed. In the last 3 years, I've bought a couple new beds. I got a 2k bed for 1100 at Asheley, and I thought it was amazing. When I bought my new house, I wanted a king, and decided to go all out, went back to ashley, and got a 3k bed for 2k, my gf know the general manager, but anyways boy what a differance. NEVER EVER BUY A CHEAP BED. shit you spend 8 hours a day in it.

One thing to note.

The prices on regular priced mattresses are always VERY negotiable.

Grind your salesman down at LEAST 30-40% and get free delivery while you are at it.

Two things you should try to never cheap-out on: shoes and a mattress.

There used to be a guy who sold mattress sets out of a storage unit in the far SE, down by the Deerfoot Casino.

I can't remember his name, but he has everything from low end to top level stuff. We bought a oversized queen mattress (can't remember the brand) with a thick pillow top for like $500... brand new in the plastic. It is amazingly comfortable... we don't like getting out of bed in the mornings!

I'll see if I can find his business card... he is the guy to go to if you want a decent mattress and not spend a ton of money.

This.

You should be able to get at least 50% off the regular price at Sleep Country by negotiating.

When dealing with mattress salemen (they're even shadier than used car salesmen), remember that "Mix and Match", "Cancelled order", "Group buy with hotel", "Promo in another city", etc are all BS excuses to try to make it look like you're getting a good deal and to pressure you into buying... don't fall for it, take your time and grind them down.

One tactic that I've read works well at Sleep Country is after you negotiate the best deal that you can, take the option to put down a 10% refundable deposit (rest to be paid on delivery). Then phone them a few days later (before it's delivered), and tell them that you want to cancel... when they ask why, tell them you found a better deal elsewhere (but don't tell them what or where).
They'll phone you back with an even better price.

halstead has the best value for money in Calgary. they make their own mattresses, and use far higher quality materials and techniques than the big names that you find at all of the crappy mattress stores.

do a search on beyond, there is a big thread about it. one member (justincalgary or something like that) used to work there, and wrote a giant thread about how the mattresses are better, etc.

if you go to their discount store, you can get a sweet mixed and match for like $400 for a queen. we have one, and it's by far the best bed i've ever had. and i've spent far more than that on my previous beds.

Thank you for the mention!

We're coming to Calgary soon guys, but we do have people coming up here to Edmonton from Cgy to visit us all the time, and we do offer professional in-home delivery in Calgary anyway.

Sleep is pretty important, buy the best bed you can afford. Our best selling and most popular bed is $4,976 in queen and $6,474 in king (a Belgian bed called the Green Sleep Vimala). The feedback and customer satisfaction are beyond (no pun intended) our wildest expectations.

A reasonably good mass-market bed would be Tempur-Pedic. We're also huge, huge fans of Natura for another mass-produced product.

Got mine at sleep country for $600. Queen pillow top + frame + box spring.

Ask them if they have any mattresses with any flaws that they sell for a discounted cost. Mine was reg $900 at the time and they said we have one with a little mark on it. It's about the size of my finger and covered by sheets, great deal!

Anyways, I would recommend just getting the whole set unless your box spring is still stable and not broken in parts.

Yeah, most older foundations are fine on basic entry level stuff. Just ensure they are completely rigid and have zero flexibility.

If you're going with a high end mattress (these typically weigh 150-300 lbs), you'll most likely want the matching foundation.

The typical entry-level foundations are just cheap thin wood and steel and wouldn't be able to properly support a really heavy mattress, not to mention if you were putting two larger people on there, too!

Go to "Matress Matress". Im not in any way affiliated with them, havent been there in 7 years but last time I went I was amazed. It was like dealing with normal people that actually cared. I bought my bed from them. The comparable sets at other stores were 500-600 more. You can see from couch shopping thread I am a die hard shopper. If its a big purchase i will compare like crazy.

They will tell you the truth - with only a mild sales pitch.

Heres the reality of mattress shopping:

Every store carries the exact same mattress by the same manufacturer - The manufacturer changes the threading or design or puts in 10 more springs, or adds 1 cm of foam to make the mattresses 'different'.

So each store has a 'different' mattress (which is actually exactly the same as every other store. They all have a different name like 'Slumber King10' Assured Comfort 9.5' Dream Beauty Queen 7.2 - But please be assured that these mattresses are exactly the same with only superficial differences.

If you go to Sleep Country Canada you will find the same Queen mattress/box set as every where else for $2400. If you go to Sears or the Bay, it will be $2800 - but you can probably get a deal if you buy it on their crappy credit cards.

If you go to The Brick You will find the same set for 2000-2200 or if you are lucky it might be like $4500 - But teh sales guy will have an awesome pitch about how they special ordered an extra 5mm of foam and custom stitching to make it worth it.

Costco beds are OK - They are lower end though and likely you have to order them and wait as they dont generally have a good selection on hand. (same with their furniture)

Go to Mattress Mattress first. Get the book that has all the lists of mattresses at all the stores - It tells you what mattresses are comparable and then you can actually do some real shopping and compare apples to apples.
