Im sick of gas prices and was wondering how much it would cost to put propane on a vehicle on general?

Any shops in calgary do it?

propane is really hard on your engine. the propane gas is not like gasoline or diesel in that it has no natural lubes. I know guys that have propane that have had to rebuild their engines due to the excessive wear and the fact that the propane burns really hot. The price for propane is cheaper than gas but you get worse mileage. My friends truck has propane. He has a 100L tank in the back and he only gets like 3-5km\L or something really stupid like that. works out to be like an average of like 10 km/ gallon. Not worth it IMO. but this is what i;ve been told.

plus also take in account that you will have to purchase the propane conversion kit and install it.

Ya i wasn't sure how much that kit is worth.

I think its around $500 to convert, but remember there are so many disadvantages to propane. It burns much faster than gasoline or diesel, and its not as widely available.

I dont get it i got a buddy with 309,000kms on propane since the truck was new and has never needed an engine rebuild yet...

Propane burns faster, you lose power with most engines, and it isn't as cheap as it used to be. Hell, I used to fill my bbq tank for $5, now its $20ish.

yeah it might cost between 40-60 cents per litre but the mileage is terrible. The propane tanks are all like minimum 100L tanks....and with the poor mileage and performance.....i just don't think it is worth it.

A propane kit for a GMC 5.7l is $3000 - 4000+

Plus the kit has to be pre manufactored for your car (I am pretty sure but not positive). So your car might not be able to be converted.

It's really hard on your engine too, it burns hot and most engines cylinder walls / water jackets are too thin to handle the 25% + increase in combustion chamber temperature.

Thats why converted taxis always burn blue. They overheat and warp the heads / valves etc. Even though most of them are ordered from the factory for propane

I'd stay away IMO.

propane has one huge advantage... because the octane is about 110, you can make lots of power if you have a motor to take advantage of it.
In Kelowna there is a first gen prelude putting out 350hp+ at the wheels with a turbo running big boost.
If you had lots of commpression(14:1) your motor would love propane.
the down side, you get lousy mileage on propane as it burns much faster...
in a few years when someone figures out how to inject propane(most are carburated now), it may become more popular again.

Here's where we stand:

Regular gas 94.5¢/L with 5.5¢/L discount = 89¢/L

C$0.89/L x 1.23202 C$/US$ x 3.785412 USgal/L = US$4.15 per US gallon

Shit, we still pay two thirds of what they pay in Amsterdam.

That doesn't look right, That means on average canadians are roughly paying 1 usd per litre. I'm not paying 1.30 per litre, are you?

You're right, and I stand corrected. It's US$2.73. I multiplied the conversion factor instead of dividing. Sorry for the brain fart. :)

C$0.89/L / 1.23202 C$/US$ x 3.785412 USgal/L = US$2.73 per US gallon

If you're really concerned about gas prices, get a bike. Why do you think Europe's got so many scooters?

propane burns way cleaner and IS EASIER on engines, due to ZERO carbon buildup, my jimmy is on propane and i am in the middle of doing a 4.3 turbo in and leaving it on propane, they get huge power and the motor runs better when it is hot, i get 350 k to a 50 litre tank, it used to be 22 cents a litre when i filled up.
Taxi cabs burn blue cause they are probably burning oil due to the fact they most likely have 600,000 k on the motor, not all cabs burn blue. the only downside IMO is that alot of gas stations dont carry it

VW TDi solves all, up to 1000km's a tank of diesel, and if you are really cheap, convert to bio-diesel and make your own gas ;)

edit: damnit, you beat me to it

ya but going that way you have to fork the money over to have a diesel plus parts or engine rebuild is nuts.

Dude, do you know anythging about Diesels?

The new ones out in the last few years are EXTREMELY reliable. Rebuilding diesel motors is for Semis and shit. VW rates their TDI's at conservative half million mile motors. Look at diesel pickups, they run forever. Diesels will far outlast their Gasoline counterparts IMO.

The funny thing is that right now in New Jersey (thursday evening) the EXACT price of gas in US$ is 2.73/gallon. :nut:

Low sulphur diesel will be ready by sping 2006. It will be better for your diesel engine.

Less smelly exhaust anyway.

Propane burns far cleaner than gasoline and will help your engine last longer but the tradeoff is the cost of installation, the price of propane isn't as cheap as it used to be, and the lack of propane availability at service stations. You would be better off getting a diesel or a bus pass.

lol..i was just stating desiel motor is more $$$$ to rebuild....Anyways i hate vw i dont know why but i do...im going to look into the propane alittle more through.

I got an idea, don't worry about it.

Lets say your vehicle gets 10l/100km (approx 28mpg) and you drive 20000km per year. You will use 2000 litres of fuel a year, at current 0.90 per litre you am looking at 1800 buck a year.

So............if you buy the propane, and it gets 10mpg less, but cost half what the gas does, then you save about 400 bucks a year (33 a month). But the conversion cost you 500, so you are operating at a loss for the first year, plus possible increased maintenance costs due to high operating temperature, not to mention you can't park underground, and there are possible winter running concerns if it is not set up properly, less places to fill up, the stink, hard to sell, etc etc etc.

All this to save 33 bucks a month, you could save this much by buying enviro friendly light bulbs for your house, drinking lucky lager instead of canadian, keeping your empties, etc etc etc.

bundi
07-29-2005, 01:58 PM
^^ Nice post :)

And the conversion is prolly gonna cost a lot more than $500...

Now... whats this about bio-diesel, vegetable oil fuel?

crazytou
07-30-2005, 12:44 PM
Ya i know just checking with me options....lol....i would also like to know how youre spose to make resturant grease into clean fuel.

forkdork
07-30-2005, 01:19 PM
You will need a Diesel to do that....... its called Bio Diesel

Or you could get a 80'z MB diesel and run it on Filtered WVO (waste vegetable oil).........

Theres tons of info on this shiz on the internet, including instructions on how to make Biodiesel

forkdork
07-30-2005, 01:25 PM
You'd also need a 2 tank system to run WVO. A tank with diesel to start the engine and shut off on and the other tank containing WVO which you would switch too in the middle.... sorta a pain IMO.
