View Full Version : Car acting funny

This is a question I am posting for a friend cuz she doesnt have an ISP email adress or any other email adress other then hotmail to sign up for beyond.

And I quote: Lately when I have been starting up my car it idles really funny. It will either idle so low that the car eventually stalls or it will idle insanely high at like 3grand. My guess is that its something funny with the oil pressure but I dont know.

This isnt your run of the mill I-dont-know-shit-about-cars-whats-a-piston type girl either. She has the basic understanding and is learning alot so i am sure with a little help she could figure it out and fix it (with my help:thumbsup:). I cant figure it out either.

Her car is a 1991 chrysler laser 5 speed. Shes kept it in great shape both looks and working. Hasnt had any major problems in the past and this is stumping her so any help would be appreciated. Like was already stated she thinks it might be the oil pump and something wonkey with the pressure.

Thanks from Meagan

Being a DSM it has its inherent issues.

Is it a Turbo DSM or N/A??...either way the IACV seems to be on the fritz. There are tons of FAQ's on the subject if you Type DSM FAQ into any search engine it should pull it up.

Also check for the BISS set screw. Make sure it is not missing, not moved. That can and will cause erratic idle.

if you are she has anymore questions let me know...and I will see what I can advise you on...

Man I miss my DSM...;)

Its an N/A but oddly fast for no turbo. Anyways hmm what would i be looking for while looking for a BISS set screw or the IACV (wat do these stand for). If you have any websites that she might beable to look into I will pass them along and thanks for the help... keep it comming

DSM FAQ Page click me... (http://www.vfaq.com/)

The BISS stands for Base Idle Set Screw.

and the IACV stanfs for Idle Air Control Valve.

Both of which are knwon to cause issues on teh DSM 4G63

Sounds like it might be the ISC (Idle Stepper Controller).

Would it have anything to do with her oil pressure. I just want to know before she goes out and buys a new oil pump. We havent had a chance to check those other things yet but i want to beable to tell her either no it isnt or yes there is a chance it is

I dont see how the oil pump would correlate to the symptoms in this case...

:werd:

I know a guy who had a similar problem with his turbo Laser. One stepper motor later and the problem went away.

Edit: They're spendy though. Try pick-a-part or similar first.

Just do the simple ISC test and you should know. If you don't know how, I can help. It takes like 10 mins (roughly) to take it out and test it on the volt meter.

BTW, I'm 99% its nothing to do with the oil pump.

Is it fixed? Did you spend a ton of money fixing it?
