View Full Version : The great V8 debate.

I have recently been drinking the 341mL bottles of V8, and took a quick look at the nutritional facts.

They look pretty good overall, lots of vitamins, and three servings of vegtables per 341mL serving. However, it contains 900mg of Sodium!

I'm not really aware of exactly how much that would look like, if it were to be a pile of table salt - but I believe that is quite a bit for a 341mL portion.

So my question is, how would a 341mL serving of V8 Original Blend compare to a 341mL glass of water, hydration wise.

Would the V8, due to its high Sodium, de-hydrate you, rather than hydrate?

"De-hydration is the worst kind of hydration!"

Why do you drink it first of all, Taste? Hydration? Something else...?

I love v8 and buy cartons at costco, good for onthe go, but thats the ONLY time i drink it, otherwise i can whip up my own juices at home. Just look for the "no salt added" version. Im not worried about the sodium. Just the salt and pepper i didnt like.

On the other hand, I wouldnt be drinking v8 for hydration - nothing tops water for that sole purpose.

900mg is really that much. It definitely wouldn't be a "pile" of salt. Compared to the alternatives (pop, kool-aid) I'd say V8 is a great choice.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, after all it's just juice... it's not going to make or break you. If you are drinking 3-5 litres of water a day then you shouldn't have to worry about de-hydration.

I generally drink V8 because I'm trying to lay off the soda a bit, plus - I like it :)

I didn't know they had a low-salt version, I'll pick some up if I see it around.

Thanks for the info!

900mg of sodium is equivalent to about half a teaspoon of salt. Salt isn't necessarily bad if you drink lots of water, exercise regularly or sweat a lot.

I haven't been able to find it in my regular grocery stores( co-op) but london drugs sells it.

Yeah I may have to go there, because the Co-op I usually get groceries at has the original blend, and the blue bottole one, I think its seasoned, or extra rich kind or something, they both taste the same!

Good to know about it only being about half a teaspoon, thats way less than I would have imagined.

I've tried the low-sodium V8 and it tastes nasty. I usually stick to Heinz tomato juice.

Low-Sodium V8 tastes fine to me. I drink a couple cans a day b/c I'm too lazy to cook up veggies and I'm sick of salads.

if you google sodium, i think you'll find that the recoomended daily allowance is about 2400mg of Sodium. So, 900mg isn't neccesarily bad for you, unless you are already getting 2400mg of sodium in your regular diet, right?

Edit: Yikes! there's 2014mg of sodium in a can of chef boyardee.
