View Full Version : What would you rather buy? Dodge Avenger or Mustang GT?

models: 1994 - 1997

I am in the market for a newer car, and have come down to these two vehicles. I know that avengers are poor when it comes to performance as well as that 80% of them are automatics. They are also the predesessor of the eagle talon, and engines are made by mitsubishi (is this a problem in regards to reliability?) Can anyone else offer any opinions about this model of car?

A mustang GT would also be nice, however they are much more common. Obviously much faster, and easier/cheaper to fix. Anyone know the base HP for a mustang GT model 1994~1997?

I am completely torn about which one i want. Avengers look pimp when they are all done up, however mustangs are significantly faster.

Which one would you pick? Your advice/experiences are appreciated.

Why would you want a car that was discontinued?

I gotta admit I've always been fond of the Avenger R/T styling, the powertrains are so anemic it's not even funny.

Buy the damn Mustang.

1994-1995 Mustang's still had the 302.

1996-1997 Mustang's got the SOHC 4.6.

Neither are going to be terribly fast, but the 96-97 will be slower most likely.

What kind of $ are you willing to spend? If you can get a 96-97 Cobra, do so. DOHC V-8 and 300 HP.

Mustang
...and make sure you get a '94 or '95 because they still have the classic 5.0L engine.

1994 & 1995
Engine code E:
215hp 284trq
Engine code D:
240hp 285trq

In another light there are sooo many performance parts for the Mustang, you could spend all the money you have on HP and still not have near everything.

If you need more info, shoot me a PM.

Hope I helped.

Avenger. Save some gas and get the 4 cyl 420a. Boost it and you will be happy. As far as reliability goes, a Mustang won't be any better than the Avenger.

a done up avenger would be unique, but with uniqueness comes bloody expensive parts.

id go mustang. cheaper parts, more common, easier to fix, etc.

in the end the mustang will go faster for MUCH less $$$

I highly appreciate all the opinions. At first I was set on getting an avenger (somewhat rare, unique and looks pretty good), however this thread has made me think twice. Now i am on the lookout for an older model 5.0L stang. I think the biggest problem with an avenger is that you can only get 5spd on the 4 cylinder model. A stang would be nice, i mean come on who doesn't drive fast? :burnout:

definately in the market for a newer car, time to upgrade :)

Get an Avenger, and I will help you turbocharge it :D
They have the same motor as my car, the 420A Chrysler (the 2nd generation non-turbo Eclipses and Talons had them)... it has a cylinder head developed by Lotus, or so the word is anyway, I can't really confirm that. People have gotten really good numbers out of our engine. There is a lot of support for these cars (not in the same way as a Civic or 4G63 DSM, but a lot of do-it-yourselfers who are extremely knowledgeable). Look at asog.net or 2gnt.com ...we can get bolt-on turbo kits that will get you 400whp :)

plus you can pay a few thousand bucks to get the 4G63 and all wheel drive drivetrain out of a DSM swapped into your avenger, and then you don't have to put up with the guys who drive mustangs, like Madsella, since to be a cool domestic guy you apparently need to be over the age of 30.

i noticed the 4 cyl's have more aftermarket than the v6's though. i havent seen a turbo kit for a v6 version of the avenger... but then again i never looked THAT hard ;)

Ha Ha. I've seen Madsella driving around. Drives that car like an old lady. Slowing down to 5 km/hr for every little bump & manhole in the road. Why have your car slammed like that if it means driving like a senior citizen?

No kidding!
plus, I always thought the point of having airbags was so that you could raise it up again so you can drive it around normally.

I drive slow for other reasons. Its not the air bags, its the 20s and the 35 series rubber, no point denting the rims. Secondly, I am on a short leash with Alberta Traffic Saftey Board. One ticket and I get my license taken away. There is nothing wrong with driving slow... and avoiding the potholes. I can raise it up but that doesnt change the fact that I want to keep my 20s in good shape.
Get over it, my car is awsome!

You have a 1991 Rustang with Altezzas!!!
Your car couldn't be further away from awesome.

I appreciate the work and effort you put into your car, but you act like a clown.

We all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it looks like alot of work went into it so I'm not going to say it's an ugly POS or anything even though I don't like Mustangs. IMO it is a riced out domestic and if you can't drive it on city roads without grannying it what's the point. You could have saved yourself thousands of dollars and bought yourself a better looking car like a Sunfire or Focus and drive like a man not a woman.:poosie:

300zx turbo z31 is totally a better ghetto racecar. Pick one up for less than 2000, intake, exhaust, boost controller. 13.6 sec 1/4.

The VG30 block is as solid as they get. There's just the usual issues that come with any turbo car. Just make sure it doesn't blow smoke or make wierd noises when you buy and you should be good to go. T3 is a pretty cheap turbo anyways. The earlier ones use the same T-5 tranny as the 5.0 Mustangs, so cheap to rebuild.
