View Full Version : Any HDTV movie collectors?

Curious if anyone collects HDTV movies off satellite/digital cable. MPEG2-PS or MPEG2-TS files hehe. Or am I the only one?

My HD DVD collection is catching up to my DVD collection, all this without HD-DVD vs BluRay format wars. Just play 'em off dual layer DVD+R's or straight off my media server.

best i get is my collection on my PVR. Movie central HD is way to easy to bother with torrent anymore.

Yea, PVR's can only hold so much (I only have 600gb on my pvr). I don't d/l my collection, it's all recorded to my PVR then ripped for external storage. Also have a firewire modded Bell receiver that can rip as well hehe.

now if someone could figure out how to mod Shaw's Motorola HD box to make getting HD movies onto DVDs easier, I would collect... my two crown jewels are Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King in the true widescreen HD, not the letterboxed stuff they usually show... except my dad DELETED Return of the King. Right now the box's hard drive is full because of the 981 minutes of fuckin Live Eight or whatever it was called.

rage, you wouldn't happen to have either of them burned onto DVD, would you?

I have Shaw's Motorola HD box. How do you rip the movies/shows off it? I didn't know that was possible?

if you have a HDTV capture card on your PC, you could hook it up that way. otherwise, all the ports on the box for the firewire and ethernet and the removable storage on the front are disabled, so the only way I can think of to do it is the HD capture card. if someone could mod it, and make it so that it shows up on your PC network as an external hard drive that you can copy to and from like it was a shared drive, that would make it much easier, but I don't know how to do that.

edit: here is a link that says you can record through the Firewire port. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=403695
Whether or not it is enabled on our box is a mystery to me. I don't think it is.

everybody on the HD forums just bitches about the Motorola 6418 box, apparently the bugs I have encountered are not unique. nobody has gotten over the unreliability enough to start messing with it :D

Thanks for the info and link. Looks like a bit of a pain to do. I think I'll just have to delete all the crap the wife recorded to make more room for my stuff :D

I'm really hoping I can find someone with Return of the King HD ripped to a computer. Apparently, the broadcast on Movie Central HD I grabbed it from a couple months ago was the first and last time it was ever shown in uncropped 2.35:1 widescreen HD, and the one torrent I did find was 23 gigabytes 1080i with only 1 seed, and it might have been cropped and a shitty transfer. especially since, if it was 23 gigabytes, the guy who encoded it had no idea what he was doing.

Well, I burn onto DVD in the MPEG2 format and play it using a HD MPEG2/WMV player (iodata avel linkplayer2). You can remaster it to 480p and stuff it on a DVD to play on conventional players, but you're dropping resolution from 1080 lines to 480 lines which kills the quality. I'm just curious if ppl collect MPEG2 1080i format movies.

Yep! The firewire port is enabled on most shaw boxes (when I had shaw anyways). Plug it to your PC and you can use a DVHS tool to save the MPEG2-TS stream to your hard drive. That's how you "rip" the movies. To play back, you'll need a MPEG2-TS compliant HD player like the iodata.

Firewire ports are enabled. You can't use a HD capture card, all that does is capture Over the Air HD signals, which we don't have. There are capture cards that can convert a 1080i signal over DVI or component and encode to MPEG2 but they cost like $20k.

I have it on my Bell PVR but it's not possible to rip those off the HDD yet. There's a few good movies I'd like to rip off my 9200 receiver. Kill bill v1 and v2.

Other than that I got like 100 other movies heh.

ahh I wasn't talking about sizing them down to play in traditional DVD players... I was more thinking about burning them in HD resolutions onto a DVD, like you were talking about, that I can then play on my computer in HD, since my comp can do 5.1 and 1080i output to my TV and home theatre.
As soon as you figure out how to get Return of the King onto your computer, let me know :D Two Towers is nice, but the battle of Helm's Deep pales in comparison to the battle of Minas Tirith when it comes time to show off the true glory of a HD TV set!

but I save as many HD movies as I can. I wish the hard drive was bigger, since I've had to delete most of them to make room for that 1,000 minute concert. Right now all I have is the Two Towers, Catch Me if You Can, and SWAT (except SWAT is a terrible, terrible movie).

A bunch of 'em are stuck on media server cuz they're over 8.5gb heh. All I need now is to figure out how to encode 1080i WMV with AC3 without breaking a/v sync. Then I can have everything on removable storage and can stop buying more HDD space.

b_t
08-25-2005, 10:30 AM
any chance I could get a copy of Boyz in the Hood and Bulletproof Monk off you? I already have Boyz on regular DVD, but an HD version would be sweet... its one of my favorite movies of all time :D
Starship Troopers in HD would be sweet too!!

have you tried encoding them using the Quicktime HD codecs?

rage2
08-25-2005, 10:36 AM
I tried all codecs and they all have issues with sync. Or take 3 days to do each movie lol.

Bulletproof monk is fucking sweeeeet in HD. Very nice encoding job.

08-25-2005, 10:38 AM
ahh I can't say I am much of a fan of the Quicktime HD codec, I was playing the HD trailers with Quicktime Alternative and it they all appear washed out. Shinobi, Serenity, and Batman Begins all looked pretty bland... although the resolution on the 1080p Serenity trailer was quite nice!! :D

Too bad that there's no affordable 1080 displays yet. Everything maxes out at 720p pretty much so more resolution doesn't really mean that much on a TV.

That changes in Sept with the Sony SXRD 1080p displays... waiting patiently now haha.

WMV-HD (VC-1) is really good for encoding. It keeps color saturation at original levels even at such low bitrates. Just need to get an encoder that can do it right!

b_t
08-25-2005, 10:46 AM
I'm pretty sure Dell's 24" widescreen LCD monitor does 1080p. Those things are pricey, really pricey, though, and not so good for gaming, and not that great for TV either. I think they just made it so they could say they had a 1080p monitor.

As far as 1080p movies go, I am not sure if it will be worth it to be an early adopter of the technology. Either the industry does it right the first time and just jumps straight to 1080p (yeah right) or they go through all this format war BS and stick with 720p for a long time.

I'll probably pick up a 1080p set when Samsung comes out with one, probably after next year's CES.

I'm not so sure about encoding movies... my comp sucks for this sort of thing. If I could find a 64 bit version of XP Pro, then I might, but otherwise a 3.2 with only 512mb of RAM would take a long, lonnnng time to encode an HD movie. In any case, what encoder are you using to do all this?

rage2
08-25-2005, 11:09 AM
Everything HD so far has been converted to 1080i and 1080p for home use so 720p is out of the question. Only good thing about 1080p is that it supports 24 and 30, so a display that can do 1080p/24 would avoid a 3:2 pulldown process. Because 1080/60i uses the same bandwidth as 1080/30p, there's no reason not to go in that direction.

Sony's SXRD (based on LCOS) is coming out in sept for $5k (50" model). That'll be the first of the affordable 1080 sets. Next year we'll see the DLP and plasma entries.

ya, I recently hooked up my shaw HD PVR via firewire, so far I have only streamed a few HD tv shows. I dont have movie central, but all this talk about HD movies I might try it out. I havent watched any movies in HD yet, mainl because I have over 700 DVD movies so everything I could record would be a dupe.

rage2, what do you use for your media server? assuming its custom built. I just moved my p4 box to behind my tv and am considering building that up, right now its not connected to the tv for output just input from shaw, but I have over 800gb in it so it might be a worthy investment to hook up the hdmi.

definately get MCHD. I have about the same # of DVD movies, and yes some of the HD ones are now dupes, but watching the movies in HD is waaaaaaay better than DVD quality. DVD quality sucks ;).

sputnik is right I use the Linkplayer2 for playback. Some of the HD movies fit on a dual layer DVD disc, the ones that don't sits on my 1.2TB server.

interesting peice of hardware. I can accomplish the same video output using DVI->HDMI from the PC right?

That does seem like a good investment eventually, cause I really really don't want my PC behind my tv in the living room, my firewire cable is only 6ft though.

rage2,

it seems that you can find much more such HDTV movies collectors in Russia than in your own country 'cause we have no official HDTV at all but people really like it and we also want to join the civilization :)

Of course, receiving anything in this format is rather problematic for us: we must pay both local network provider (it's quite expensive, believe me!) and also to news servers if we want to download things faster.
But even in this conditions we've managed to download some HDTV movies in MPEG2-TS (with AC3 sound, of course). (See the list in the end of this post.) Our approach to storing the movies is a bit different: only sometimes we use DL DVD, usually we divide movie to several (2-3-4>) DVD discs.

My question to you is the following: would you be interested in exchanging the missing parts of our collections (1 movie to 1 movie)? It could be done by making copies on DVDs and sending them via some quick mail like DHL Express.
Can you divide movies on your media server to several DVDs in the same way as we do?
Besides, in principle, if you are not interested in the movies we have, we could just buy something from you, if you are willing to sell...

If you are interested, here is our joined list of the HDTV movies (note: 90% of them are in MPEG2-TS, the rest is in smth else like VMW):
