My sister has a 95 VW golf and when you first start it up and when you stop occasionally the engine revs up to 3-4 thousand RPM's, and then it just goes back to normal.
It's very hard on the engine and I have no idea why it does this, Thanks for any suggestions.

Yah thanks it might be the throttle position sensor, does anyone know if this a hard or expensive fix?

usually right beside the throttle body and like 2 screws

Intake mani leak ?
Buy some carb cleaner and spray between your intake mani and your block when its revving like crazy - if it settles, you have a leak and should replace the gasket.

I had the same problem with my 90 accord but only when it was cold out.
i would let it run for a while to warm up and it'd stop.
could be a vacuum leak, or a problem with the IAC, or TPS...

A vacuum leak should not cause it to rev up that high. 2000RPM maybe, but not 3000-4000. Most likely a combination of things, perhaps a bad TPS with a vacuum leak?
Normally a bad TPS will cause your idle to come up anywhere from 1000-2000ish RPM. I'd start by checking and adjusting the TPS. Most likely it's not bad, but has gone slightly out of adjustment.

Yah thanks, I agree about the vacuum leak because it's more like somebody is slamming on the gas for a few seconds and then it stops
I'll try adjusting the tps
check and make sure everything is plugged in...
or go to VW and make them check the idle...
