I got a call from Shaw and they have some "concerns about my internet connection". I'll find out tommorow, but has anyone else had this call before. I am some what curious.

I received a call regarding transfering too much upload data....basically told me take it easy...which I have done.

It's usually a bandwidth issue, aka downloading/uploading too much or running some sort of server (ftp, mail, web) on your machine is my guess.

I figured it would be that. My Mom thinks it's because someone downloaded porn LOL

I am slightly concerned about being banned.

its your Data traffic dude, that is the main selling point for telus, they dont monitor that shit.

BWHAHHAHAHAHAH!!!

*In a nerdy voice* "Uhh you realize you have downloaded 112 gigs, and uploaded 57 gigs in the past 30 days"

HAHHA what a dork. The key to my success! Letting Kazaa upload with 10 consecutive users at a time (sharing 2.6 gigs) on 24/7.

I am not banned by the way

They only care about teh uploads because the cablemodem infrastructure has a limited amount of upstream bandwidth.

I've been heard the 'Shawfia' has been cracking down a lot lately.

im thinking of getting Telus high speed soon
is it better than shaw??

jdmakkord
02-04-2003, 11:47 PM
they do, but they aren't too worried about people exceeding their bandwidth. I've been on adsl for 2.5 years now and have yet to get any sort of warning. Shaw used to call me weekly.

telus has a large enough bandwidth for now, to ignore the limit abusers. But chances are, when they do release their iptv service, they might start cracking down a bit. The television service is gonna chew up that extra bandwidth pretty quick.

aznblood's shaw account has been canceled because of too much bandwidth hogging, he was given like 2 warnings, a one week service suspension and then no more account. he's on telus now...

I've gotta couple friends that got banned from Shaw for excessive bandwith use as well...

dogstar

ive been warned a couple few times by shaw, but no suspensions of service.

telus has lower limits than shaw IIRC but they currently dont enforce at all.

shaw does enforce, but usually only when you grossly violate the terms of service, so for 95% of people, its never going to be a problem.

telus is a lot slower than shaw last time i checked, and ive had way fewer problems on shaw, as well as when you finally get through to shaw with a problem, they usually commit to getting a line tech out within a day or two, unlike the three week wait telus warned me about once.

:O ADSL's speed is dependent on how close to the router in your area you are. The closer you are, the faster your service is. Shaw has a set amount of bandwidth everywhere, but everyone in the area has to share it. This is why in neighbourhoods with lots of people on Shaw it is dog slow. And in some areas why Telus is so slow. If you are further than 7km from a router, you can't get DSL service at all.

Dear **************,

Please contact us either through email or a phone call within 48 hours to
avoid a disruption in your internet connection.

As a service to all our customers, Shaw regularly monitors network traffic
to help ensure adequate service levels are maintained. This note is to
advise that there has been recent activity on your Shaw High Speed Internet
account that you may not be aware of that is in violation of Shaw's
Acceptable Use Policy.

A recent monitoring report has indicated your account has exceeded the
acceptable amount of bandwidth usage, which involves data transfer to and
from your computer. Excessive bandwidth usage is commonly caused by
streaming audio/video, running servers (HTTP, FTP, NNTP), and exchanging
large files such as multimedia (songs, movies, large graphics etc).
Unmonitored use of file sharing programs such as Napster, Kazaa, Audio
Galaxy, Morpheus and Gnutella applications typically results in a high
amount of bandwidth consumption. This can cause slow internet speeds and
poor computer performance. The guidelines for a residential account are 1
GB to 2 GB upstream and 5 GB to 6 GB downstream per month. In the last 28
days 3 GB have gone upstream and 103 GB have gone downstream through your
internet connection.

Instructions for reconfiguring these programs are available at the following
link http://members.shaw.ca/filesharing. Making the outlined changes will
not affect your ability to use these programs for downloading files.

Please phone 303-6324 or email ([email protected]) us so that we may aid you
in reducing this upstream traffic or to advise us of actions you may have
already taken. It is very important that this traffic be reduced as quickly
as possible.

For your convenience, we have attached a copy of the Acceptable Use Policy
and would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Please include all previous correspondence when replying.
Thank you for choosing Shaw!

i know that at my parents house in calgary, shaw is a way better solution than telus, at their old house in edgemont telus was faster (cuz everyone in the neighborhood had shaw), and here at my apartment in edm, telus is good too.

i think outage rates are about the same for both services.

There's other types of movies?!

Seriously, from everyones experience would you say if I laid low for a while (kept U/L and D/L numbers low) for a while, then downloaded lots a couple months later would they consider me for a ban?

Ben

they will watch you for another 2 months and then you go back to normal surveilance level.

NICE SCORE

also, notice that they specified UPSTREAM traffic in their letter.... no mention of the 103 gb downstream ;)

as far as i understand, they keep quite good records of your traffic, no matter what you change your address to.
also, most people arent able to change their i.p properly, it usually resets, then goes back the the semi permanent i.p that your isp has provided for you.

No it doesn't work (resetting the modem).

Yeah it works great, but the problem is you need to know how to time it properly with when they take samples from the modem...

Care to teach me how? I've just received another email.

"The entry level SOHO (Small Office Home Office) business package is limited to 2 GB upstream and 6 GB downstream per month. We expect only that customers on a residential package would use the same or less traffic than this. During the month of January, there was 47 GB uploaded and 12 GB downloaded through your internet connection"

Fuckers.

I think it's because I have IMESH that it's so high - its true, they are like fucken locusts, i'm always uploading something it seems. I'm trying to shut down IMESH more often now, since it's causing me a lot of hassle.
