I have an IBM thinkpad notebook. A few weeks ago I was on it, opening a video, and the processor or whatever it is that usually clicks when stuff is loading (sorry no idea what the proper name for it is) made a loud clunk noise a couple time. Then I got a blue screen for a second then it rebooted. I cant get the system booted up now, and it wont start in safe mode.

Is this thing fit for the pit? Or is it worth the time/money to have it fixed?

the ticking noises..
is the hard drive..
everytime it reads off of it.. it makes a ticking sound..
sounds like the boot up source is broken ( hard drive )

Hmm alright. rough idea how much that would cost? Will I need a HD from a similar laptop, or can I get one from someone selling a generic one used?

HD is cooked. Take it to Memory Express up there in Edmonton. They'll fix you right as rain!

Call them. Don't e-mail them, tell them what they need (new HD for you're series of IBM Thinkpad) and then pop in, drop off the laptop and have them install it. From the sounds of it, you don't have the slighest knowledge grasp about you're computer, and no worries; an extra few bucks is all it'll cost. :)

I have a bit of knowledge about the computer, just not the hardware thats inside it. :)

Thanks for the tip. So I will lose everything on my computer right?

yes you will lose everything, all you need is a laptop hard drive... you can swap it yourself, its very very simple.

It's possible to have your data recovered, but you'll have to pay out your nose for it.

At best you'll lose some data. At worst you lose it all. But since you're still getting boot up and BSOD, chances are some data are recoverable easily. Not totally dead yet.

If this is under IBM warranty get them to fix it. Just make sure get someone to get your data out before they take the dead drive away.

Yup sounds like hard drive failure.
You will lose all your info but you can get another blank hard drive.
If there is VERY IMPORTANT data on the drive it can be retreived by some companies for around $1k /Gig
