I believe they had two barrels of whale oil, so that the ship captain could work for a few extra hours each night (used for light, but not totally necessary). Coal on a wood ship? No, but they did bring gunpowder. Carbon burned for propulsion? Centuries too early.
62 foot ship for a crew of 40 that has to survive for 36 days means it was mostly filled with food. And of course four cannons, and an insane amount of rope. The "Black Pearl" in the movies would be about 3x the size. Had the Santa Maria been about 15% smaller, they probably would have never found America, and simply turned back for lack of food (Historian guesstimates)
