Hypertech Power Programmer 111

Just picked up a hypertech power programmer 3 off ebay for my 97 Camaro SS. They've been discontinued for some time due to an EPA issue in California from what I've read. Mainly getting it to correct speedo for 3.73 gears and also lower cooling fan speeds for a 160 t stat swap. Also will bump up the rev limit from 5800 to 6300 once I do the 1.6 roller rockers. Question that I have is if the power programming canned tune is worth loading. I know that when I ran a canned 93 octane tune off a Diablosport Predator for my old SRT4 it ran dangerously lean. How do these tunes make power? Do they just randomly lean out the fueling and make it feel more powerful off the line with losses at higher rpm? I figure as long as a I run 91 octane fuel and listen for knock I should be ok to at least try out the tune. Thoughts?

Do you have a way to monitor AFRs?

Usually they’ll leave the fuel pretty close to stock and run a more aggressive timing curve to take advantage of higher octane fuel.

^Thanks all. I heard the issue with the SRT4 flash tune is due to it maxing out the stock injectors. As the LT1 is not forced induction I'm hoping it plays nicely. I'll be taking it to Evan @ Rev'D Performance anyhow to do a pre/post tune baseline.

I don't have a wideband or any other way to monitor A/F unfortunately.

Canned tune for stock N/A cars is usually just a few degrees more timing, they usually don't pick up any power by leaning them out from where they are stock. At calgary elevation you can get away with 91 just fine. Evan should have a wideband he can stick up one of your tailpipes to give you AFR readout during the dyno.

The car seems to be happy with 91 as it's still stock internally. I think it's running a tad rich with the factory tune as most late model GMs do.
