I'm seriously considering the Golf Sportswagen as a replacement for the GTI as a budget option. Less budget option is the G70, but that's not a wagon.

My brother has one, it's been awesome. He has 2 kids now though and they do regret not getting a minivan - that will be their next vehicle for sure. So if you have kids you may want something with more space. For 1-2 people though it is incredibly practical.
The Alltrack version is way too much of a premium IMO, you can get way nicer cars for $40K but I guess they aren't wagons.
I'm loving my alltrack, for what it's worth. Previous car was a big(ger) turbo 1.8T A4 Avant and I thought I was going to have trouble with the downgrade in power, but the golf is pretty responsive and makes reasonable torque. APR has a bunch of options for more power, too.
Would think you could do $30K OTD on this one:

Anything without wooden side paneling is a wannabe wagon at best ;)
The glory days hey

I remember sitting in the back-facing seats, looking out the back window in my friends' parents' old Ford Taurus wagon. I can only assume that was a death trap.
Bring up a used Acura TSX wagon from the states.
Outside of Audi and vw, is anyone making a manual wagon anymore? Saw a gorgeous v70r at Safeway today, brown leather interior and minty shape, if I could have fou;d one it would have been my second choice after my forester xt
Is the Lincoln mkt a wagon? It's ugly anyway.
