Bens DIY PLASTI-DIP your Wheels thread.

Hey all here's a thread on a quick way to give some cheap wheels a new life.

I picked up this set of wheels for a couple hundred bucks versus buying Steelies for winter. Figured I would give a go at some DIY plastidipping. As these wheels are for winter it didn't matter that much how they looked as anything is better than Steelies but if it turned out great then thats a win.

Needed the following:

-2 cans black matte
-1 can silver metalizer
-1 can glossifier
-1 spray can handle attachment for better dexterity

About $50 bucks. Shipped.

I like working with plasti dip, it's fun and easily reversible. What you did to those rims is pretty much exactly what I did to my X5M's as well minus the glossifier. I did pretty much one can of plasti dip per wheel with two coats of metalizer on each wheel. Was almost a satin finish.

Plastidip for rims is shitty if you expect it to stay perfect, but if you are doing it just for fun and don't care so much sure. Take a bit of advice if you are fussy... Make sure your tires are mounted prior to using it as the force tire pulling over the lip with peel it often!

For those who have dipped rims or other trim on their car, how do you remove it easily? Particularly when you did a coat that's too thin. That's like impossible to get off.
Heard "Dip Dissolver" works well, but anyone supply it locally?

i dont have any experience with it, but i'd say a pinstripe removal eraser would probably work well.

What's the best product to use to completely clean grime and dirt off the rim prior to spraying?

I've personally used goo gone on small trim pieces if it's small. Wipes off rather easily.

To the OP, where did you get it shipped from? PM me if necessary. Plastidip isn't cheap.

In regards to cleaning prior, I've had good results with armorall rim cleaner, a hose, and elbow grease.

One option, a total pain but it works, is to just respray the area with more plastidip. Build up at least 3 coats total and then once dry it peels off real easy. Might be easier to do it that way if you have no way to dissolve it.

Yeah, I could give a shit, they're winters, I had some free time and I wanted to try it out, experiment with colors and then probably powdercoat them when I make of my mind.

For 50 bucks and an afternoon, what the hell. People want absurd amounts for paint/powdercoating in this town. Will likely take a roadtrip to the US next spring and get it done for less than half. Might as well since Im going anyways.

As for the tires on or off, absolutely, you are correct, but I wanted to do all that curb rash repair and whatnot so it was FAAAAAAR easier without the tires on them. Plus I hadnt got the tires yet, and wanted to get the rims painted while it was still nice out. I just told the guys at the shop to go gentle and they did, no peeling.

+1. I had plasti-dip on my corolla wheels for about 2 years and it never peeled on me, even with switching between summers and winters numerous times.

A lot of it comes down to how well they are done... Properly prepped not so bad, but we have had some cross our paths that peel easier than a mandarin orange!

I'll make an actual contribution to this thread... If you are plastidipping with tires on, no need to tape them off, spray tire shine on, then it will peel right of the tires, the gap between the tire and rim will just"cut" naturally... Also, don't Plasti dip in cold weather, it just doesn't work properly, I did it once and it orange peeled like crazy.

I used cheap playing cards and stuck them between the wheel and tire all the way around. Worked like a charm and kept all the over-spray to a minimum.

Also, to tirebob's point, proper prep and application is key. Numerous thin coats > one or two thick coats

Isn't the great the thing about plastidipping though is that you don't have to worry about coat thickness, it's a self leveling product. I've always just laid down three thick coats and it dries itself out perfect... Keep in mind this is in temps of at least 18 ish degrees... Proper cleaning of all grim and grease ensures stickness but you can pretty much spray this product any way you want and it will dry perfect as long as it's laid flat (prevent dripping).
