Didn't know this is happening.
They do that every year
This is great, can you just show up any time without getting hassled?
can I bring my tesla?
I go every year this time of year so I can bag on my shit without fear of repurcussion. Fun to chase the guys on dirt bikes
Also don't go unless you have studs, your car will be worthless and holding up traffic. Doesn't matter what car you have, studs is the main thing.
I did that performance ice driving school in my 09 F150 Crewcab with all-seasons, which was a hoot, but yeah, it's going to be MUCH slower around any course compared to anything with studded tires.
It’s going to get shut down sooner or later, just like Ice Dice and winter driving schools did.
There is actually a “organization” or “club” who goes out together and has been trying to create and event that isn’t an “event” because they know what happened in the past. Transalta owns the right of way onto the lake, and can shut them down if they feel it’s a organized group or event. They are just trying to get around it really.
As I recall, Transalta shut it down (winter driving events) before due to potential liability reasons. I am actually surprise it has flared back up
you won't make it with those crap batteries.
It wasn’t a liability issue, they just simply did not want organized driving events on the lake. Our club carried insurance before this event came to light, and parked on tarps in case of leaks, as well as stayed far away and as hidden as possible from the public boat launch and they were totally unwilling to allow anything.
I went out to watch a few times and you were buried way at the back out of the way.
Only way around this is a Chiniki Gas Bar sponsored event.
Stole the idea from a PitM arena deal idea.
There were a 1000 people out there today, no exaggeration. Like you needed a parking lot attendant just to drive across the lake, kind of busy.
Taken with my friend's potato, maybe 1/10 the cars out there.

And shut down in 5...4...3...2...
I went on Saturday figuring it would be quieter while still cold ahead of this weather. Was nice, not many people on the back track so got some fun in. Main track was fun but so many on it you’d be tailgating someone after a couple corners while also having someone on your ass too.
Only thing that irked me as dangerous is they no one spreads out for parking. Lots of people parked right side by side like a grocery store. It’s been cold enough that the ice is probably thick but that’s still not bright.
I went Saturday morning too, I thought 10am would be early enough there'd be no one around! It was way better to feel out my car with only a dozen other cars.. Sunday looked crazy!
I saw some folks auguring the ice on Saturday and get almost the full auger flight into the ice before water came up.. that's gotta be pretty solid.
I've parked a drilling rig weighing over 90 tons on ice about 18" thick. I don't think Ghost lake is much of a worry with ice over three feet thick.
I'd like to drive on that lake again. In the past, I took the SASC winter driving class, on the lake. So much fun.

the emissions in the otherwise pristine land......How dare you!
Is the dude in that BMW drinking a beer in that pic?
I’m turning the wheel.
Nothing but love.
that's fucking stupid with taht many cars.
Looks a lot better with the snow melted down.

At least back in the day, when posers did it they didn't face the online scrutiny like today.
I’ve lived in Cochrane 18 years and there has been tracks cleared on this lake every winter and likely the 40 years before this. The news having one guy or group claiming credit for a drift track that’s ‘never been done before’, is hilarious. The rcmp patrol the parking lot every year too, people need to chill out. RCMP can shut down a lake in winter as easy as shutting down airspace over the Rocky Mountains.
Collecting license plates.
I've been thinking of going out after work for a few laps on a weekday to avoid the ridiculous number of people. Anyone been out on a weekday? Ice still safe after the recent warm temps?
it could be 20c for a week and that ice isn't getting thinner.
It is completely bare ice out there, as of yesterday. Zero snow.
There were definitely some liability concerns, at least regarding us (SASC), when I spoke with TransAlta. TransAlta's fear was that if in the extremely unlikely event we had a dozen cars go through the ice people would still lawyer up regardless of the waiver we had them sign. And with TransAlta being the owners of the lands under the reservoir they felt the risk was unacceptable. It was a big shame because we had safety at the forefront, completely opposite to these yahoo's.

Watched the whole video waiting for a drone to get smoked
Has anyone heard anything about ghost lake this year? I know it's been warm up til now. I've never been but want to take my son out to learn the ropes of driving on ice, are there any courses going on anyone knows of?
The guys that plowed the tracks last year are not doing it this year. You can still go on the ice, if it's safe enough, and mess around. CSCC is doing Ice Dice this year on McGregor Lake down by Milo if you wanted to do something more organized and timed.
Ohh yeah, I remember seeing that last time I was out there and thinking that they were taking on a lot of liability by offering that.

Somebody will have the lake plowed when it’s safe. I can’t remember any winter the last 30 years that it hasn’t had some sort of track on it and it’s multiple groups doing it. My neighbour has a plow on his Chev, maybe we’ll go make a giant Beyond logo and cock’n balls logo for the kids to lap on.
Noooooo I want the tracks It's so much fun
Ghost is fucking mint right now. Took the X5 out there to “maintain the battery” and spun a few laps, I was the one and only tracks on the lake. 8-10cm of fresh and very smooth with good visibility. Ice was measured at 13” last weekend so I’m sure it way thick enough today.
