Wow, I was expecting $3.25-4M/AAV depending on the term.

That's a great deal of he wins and keeps the #1 spot.
Frolik's name is trending on twitter so i think they are trying to trade him.
Maybe lucic can top him up a mil or so
Marner has been signed. For a shitload of money... come on Tkachuk.
Lucic just did more in one shift than Neal did all of last year!
TERRIBLE.. he should NOT be the highest paid player on the flames..
Wrong way to look at it, as the cap increases every year player salary's obviously increase. You need to look at % of salary cap that year for value on a player. Tkachuk is only getting paid 250,000.00 more than Gio and Johnny Hockey, but compared to the cap when those contracts were signed to now, he is making less percentage for market cap then they are.
What are you supposed to do? Sign Crosby for 7 years and not pay any players more money than he makes a year for those seven years?
I like the contract.
How the business goes, if cap goes up x% then the next contract up is bound to exceed previous by said %
But he is one of the top players on the Flames and 21 years old, might I ask what value you think he should have signed for given his numbers?
Had the number approached 9.5... could be a different story. Now we will get to watch what he does for the next 3 years, if he improves his next contract will be much larger.
More AAV then I wanted to see, but Dubas really fucked the league over with his stupid overpriced RFA Matthews contract.
Personally, I wouldve been ok with around the $6m AAV, we literally have no cap space left and have to CUT a roster spot.. He was streaky, had TRIPLE the penalty minutes of Johnny, and 5x as many as Monahan and middle of the pack +/- numbers, just dont see him as a $7m player.
He had a bad streak from Jan - March but how much of that also had to do with the play of his linemates. When I look at him while he might get 62 PIMs I have a feeling he draws the most penalties on the flames (I tried to find some advanced analytics quickly but came short). What stands out to me is that he was +30 and +40 on Backlund/Frolik respectively while playing on a line that primarily takes on the opponents top line as a shutdown and counter punch. You also have to consider that he plays both sides of the ice, PP and PK, and is only getting better. Had it not been for that dry spell he probably would have been in the 90s for points.
JG went from 4 PIMs 2 years ago to getting mid 20s back to back seasons. Monahan is probably the furthest from aggressive you can get which is reflected in his PIMs total. The +- is a difficult stat with him given how much he played between lines on extra minutes and role he was asked to play.
If he was on the top line I would suspect his numbers would reflect more of that.
I don't think I'm alone in respect to his value, many of the "experts" were anticipating something in the 8.5-9ish range originally with a long term. Calgary is I guess gambling that he won't become a 1+pt/game player or were trying to crunch some short term numbers.
Sadly the sacrificing of a player has come against a few things. The Neal contract came back to bite big time and the Lucic trade is just... yah don't like to dive in on that. But having Valimaki get hurt and re-signing stone was unplanned and that alone had us under. Then you have the failed trades of Brodie that don't help, plus I keep hearing they have been trying to ship out Frolik to get the number lower. See how the rest unfolds. Worse case I could see them just burying Quine for a while until an injury happens and running 22 if they can't find a trade.
I'm okay with the $ amount and term, we're in a tight tight cap point at the moment and the term will let the team see how much he develops past his first few seasons to see if he warrants a big dollar contract in 3 years.
I went to the game yesterday.. It was fun.
Ive not been to the saddle dome in ages...
Why is the food so bad at the stadium...? Why why..? I had this weird dried up burger and with dried up chicken fingers...
Its just after 3pm and I still have not gone to the toilet. This is not normal.
It is just how the league works with when you signed your contract in relation to the salary cap that year, for instance look at the Avalanche. Nathan Mackinnon is a top 5 player in the league and he is getting criminally underpaid at $6.3M. Rantanen is about to sign and most likely make north of $9M, despite being less valuable a player.
