Hi.
I just tried the Schneider's cheddar smokie. There was little to no cheddar flavor, and the casing was like chewing plastic.
Anyone got any recommendations?

I used to eat a ton of cheddar smokies, and I think the ones I usually buy now are Harvest brand. Barvarian smokies with cheddar. I get them at Superstore
I always buy smokies in the bags, and not the ones that are vacuum packed. I find the vacuum packed ones much saltier, less plump, and not as fresh as a result.

I like Mitchels Cheddar Jalepeno ones, they're more like hot dogs though, but they're delicious
Oh, I wish I could send you a pack of the Jalepeno Cheddar ones I get from a local butcher back home (good old small town butcher)! Holy shit, they're the best ones ever!
Good luck on your search, they're so tasty when they're good!
We should get a petition together for Spolumbos to start making them.
I'll have to snoop around the different farmer's markets and drop into Longview and see what they have as well. Haven't had jalapeno cheddars dogs in the longest time
To be fair, OP just wants regular Cheddar but where they make one they usually make both!
Go hit up the heritage farmers market, I sampled one there a while back and holy jesus it was perfect.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I've since tried Johnsonville's Cheddar as well as their Chile Cheese. They're fairly decent, and a hell of a lot better than the Schneiders. I'll try the Harvest brand next.
Good call on a farmer's market and/or a local butcher.
While you are at the farmers market, get some of the sausages from Anna's columbian market. Not "cheddar smokies" but fucking amazing nonetheless.
Thanks, but I'm in Lethbridge:cry:
Which location is this?Quote:

Calgary Farmers market. by the shooting edge.
Just tried Grimm's Jalapeno and Cheddar from Sprawlmart.
They're FAR better than the Schneiders and Johnsonville smokies that I've tried so far.
Not worth new thread, so sue me.

I love cheddar Smokies and that's all fine & dandy. I'm bumping this thread for advice on a substitute for Johnsonville Brats. While Johnsonville Brats are absolutely nothing like traditional bratwurst, I still do think they're delicious from time to time. Maybe they're considered "American Bratwurst" because it doesn't seem like they're trying to be Euro.
So, although I like Johnsonville, it's disappointing that they're loaded with MSG and even worse, silicon dioxide. I'm no health nut, but I'd prefer to not eat that, where possible.
What company/brand has copied Johnsonville Brats? Please help me search for an alternative.
Thanks so much!
I cannot or will not help you, but I will provide moral support. My guilty pleasure in the inauthentic tubular meats department is also Johnsonville Bratwurst. But a point of clarification is required. Do you mean #1 orn#2 here? They are quite different.

I'm a #1 man myself.
I am having a hard time figuring out what you are asking here. If you don’t like preservatives I would avoid sausage as a general statement, preservative free sausage is like gluten free bread.
Personally I like the grimes sausages. Pretty awesome tasting across their lineup, especially with cheese.
