As usual, China. Man I have someone at work trying to get me to go over there for a few weeks. Do. Not. Want.
Quarantine the whole country.
Nothing but fear-based reporting. Corporate clicks and profit.
Total of 1 person reported dead.
Why is this news?
Was animal to human for the 1st 50 odd cases. Then it got to other country with 1st case of potential human to human.
Plus we got lucky on SARS. Nobody knew WTF happened and it just went away.
The fact that SARS got as bad as it did was Chinese government cover up. The frequent reporting to WHO is actually a good change from Chinese gov.
Influenza A is scarier imo.
human to human transmission confirmed.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ew-cases#img-1
Number of deaths now up to 4 - time to mass panic!!!!
Just more profits for the corporations.
There are much more serious diseases that one should be thinking about, than this.
It already has confirmed cases in a number of Asian countries. CDC has just confirmed the first case in Washington State.
With the largest mass migration of humans in history occurring this week (Chinese New Years), likely to spread further.

That video is disgusting.
Fucking China.... that market is horrifying.
crazy that they would eat those things... :barf:
Where it gets scary is that RO rate... One sick patient infected 14 healthcare workers per that CNN story. And you can probably assume masks were in use.
And like SARS it's running a 10% fatality rate it appears.
But yeah it's just scaremongering...
I forgot all about contagion, wonder if it's on prime or Netflix... Now I want to watch it again.
Scary that clip starts off with "busiest shopping weekend of the year". And it's lunar/chinese new year...
Meanwhile as crackbook and twitter are pointing out.1820 cholera, 1920 Spanish flu... 2020...
2020 Tokyo summer Olympics.
While most are avoiding China, Chinese is still the no 1 tourist group in Japan and the world is going to meet there this summer.
SARS did not subside until July 2004. So the best we can hope for is this thing disappear as quickly before the games starts.
Is China really that gross?
I work with some FOB chinese guys, and they are talking about delaying or cancelling trips home until this is all worked out. They seem pretty worried.
After this threat came down from the central gov:
The number jumped immediately to 17 deaths and 500 infected. And so far, not a single one hospitalized has recovered and released.Quote:
The BBC reports the Chinese political body responsible for law and order said anyone who tried to cover up new confirmed cases would “be nailed on the pillar of shame for eternity,” as the country tries to put the world at ease that it will be transparent in the handling of the outbreak.

For some reason I had it in my head that SARS was way more serious - I looked it up and 774 people died, about half of those in China. Obviously that isn't insignificant and even 1 person dying is a tragedy, but for what was basically reported by the news as a worldwide pandemic originating in China with ~1.4B people, that's a drop in the bucket compared to things like the flu which kill hundreds of thousands of people annually. So far this seems similar to the SARS incident.
As for China travel, I used to work for a Chinese owned company and the guys I worked with who were from there told me never to go there. They said they won't even go back for more than a week or so to visit family because things like pollution are so bad. There are some beautiful parts of the country but I have no desire to ever go there personally based on what people keep telling me.
I would love to visit as a tourist, there's some things in that country that you can't see anywhere else in the world. However, the downsides are large too. I don't much like cities when I travel, or crowds. LOL.
Thats exactly it - its a mass media 'profit pandemic' - with a few dozen deaths in a country of over a BILLION people.
More fear = more clicks.
In AB - we had 30 people die last winter with the flu - thats in a province of ~4.5 MILLION people - where is the mass media panic about this????
This year's flu shot was targeted mostly for the wrong strain, so there's that...(according to some, others say it's "up to" 72% effective for the "dominant" strain).
China just quarantined Wuhan today.
IMO the difference between these viruses is their lethality, compared to the regular flu. Yes, 40 people died from the "regular flu", but how many millions caught the flu in that sample size? We're talking up to 10% lethality/fatality with these Chinese origin viruses, which would = 100,000 of people dead in Alberta in a direct ratio comparisson, had all those people caught the coronovirus/whatever instead of the regular flu.
Relax guys, Chairman Xi says it's under control, and Trump is vouching for him. So it must be true.
When there are hundreds of healthy people dying daily - like with serious, actual pandemics - let me know.
For now, like with other past viral episodes, this is mostly being controlled and contained. The mass media will milk this for all its worth.
you can have whatever virus you like, as long as it's a corona

Yeah they don't always nail it, though there is evidence to suggest that any flu shot is better than none even if they don't get the exact strain(s) right.
Interesting article from yesterday:
https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_relea...-ivo012120.php
My daughter and I got the flu shot in early November. My wife didn't. She was sick as a dog for a week in December. I cant 100% confirm if it was the flu or not, but the fact neither of us got her bug just made me glad we got the shot.
fake news, big pharma, paltrow candles . . . .
Similar story - can't confirm anything, but every one of my coworkers who never gets the shot got crazy sick for 2+ weeks and missed a bunch of work (some are still sick) and I am fine as per usual. I am now over 2 years without getting a cold/flu (knock on wood).
Usually the most obvious difference between a cold and the flu is a fever.
GF is a nurse and Emergency room wait times were over 10 hours on multiple days, largely due to people coming in with flu symptoms, didn't get the shot, and they wait 10 hours to be told to go home and get some rest lol.
Kinda jealous of Chinese power now...
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ronavirus.html
All of Wuhan - is now quarantined. Wonder how effective that will be?
That's a city bigger than NYC for reference
Anyone know what those vehicles spraying clouds into the streets are? Disinfectant?
Edit
Tweets not relevant video is...
Videos apparently from Shanghai not Wuhan, still odd to see spraying like this in an area
Me it is the opposite... Never had the flu shot in my life and the last time I had the real flu (not a bad cold calling it the flu) was in the 90's.. Now in the 80's I got the measles shot and some months later got full blown red measles and was out of school for weeks. Go figure. That is not an anti-vaxxer comment either because I am no anti vaxxer.. Just two of my own experiences.
The only way you can know if you got the flu or not is with viral testing - did you have that done every time you've been sick to find out if it's a cold or flu?
This problem goes both ways, because what happens is people will get the flu shot, get a bad cold and think it's the flu, then declare the flu shot worthless despite being wrong about everything (not saying this is you).
Anyone who is around seniors, babies, or people with respiratory issues, that's who gets killed by the flu. So getting your flu shot could save them.
This is just ignorance. Do you know what can happen if a full on outbreak happens in densely populated cities in Asia? Its dumasses like you that underestimate the potential damage. You know the Asian flu in 1957 killed 1 to 4M people worldwide? 4M is still a small number on a global scale, but it is by no means small. Better safe than sorry. I am in HK and I am wearing a mask when I am out now.
As someone with a newborn, this is always worrisome news
A mass cull is the best thing that can happen to the human race. A reduction to 200-million people worldwide would solve pretty much every major problem facing humanity. Nobody wants to admit that, but it's true.

This is my go-to :)
I may actually print one just for giggles if the paranoia evolves around here

Quote:
MONTREAL -- Six people in Quebec who had recently travelled to China have displayed symptoms of a respiratory virus, a spokesperson for the provincial health ministry said on Wednesday.
Close the borders!!!
I for sure trust the Chinese military to put powder into my lungs.
Chinese Grand Prix in doubt now. China bans motorsports activities up to April.
So we went pretty quick through these steps :
1) what is this?
2) nah, this is click bait
3)......
4)China has quarantined a huge city, is doing aerial spraying and has banned motorsport events.

The entire Australia on fire, country shooting down airplane randomly, deadly virus threatening to end the human race, un-precedented extreme cold temperature in Canada, Trump getting impeached...I think the Mayans are a bit off, it's 2020 not 2012. Good times guys, good times.
Great year to be in Canada. Not because we are doing objectively great maybe, but by comparison, wow!

3 cities now huanggang and chibi
Wuhans labgeeks are saying ~4000 cases (those confirmed cases are those who got sick enough to attend hospital and have blood drawn to confirm)
Infected Lady from wuhan who got turned away at airport rebooked multiple times took various drugs and managed to fly to France - got past biosecurity measures. Posted it all on Weibo, now they're hunting for her.
Wouldn't Iran be on her flight path? hmmm, only if someone could do something about it.
Fuck off with your bullshit numbers and hysteria. Revelations told me this is just media propaganda. Obviously this disease doesn't really exist. Clearly they are just making numbers up, quarantining entire cities for no reason, and dropping mind control powder on all their citizens for lab research.
https://amp.scmp.com/news/china/soci...mpression=true
And she was hitting up Michelin restaurants once she arrived. Chinese embassy asked her to call the French authorities. Nice.
Move to Greenland.
Why is motorsport singled out and not other gatherings?
"Escape for Wuhan"
https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/compone...4-20200123.htm
Damn, like real life zombie movie.
That's what you get for not paying your Beyond Platinum membership.
Its because of bat soup!!!!!!!!!!
This is not bullshit media propaganda - this is mass media applying hyperbole to a bad situation to make more profits on clicks and views. Been going on for decades.
I worked on the line for AC TechOps at YVR during SARS and the fear narrative was a joke.
Yes, wash your hands and wear a mask if you want - but dont live in fear because the fucking mass media tells you that you should.
I wonder how long before it "somehow" gets into the Hong Kong crowds...
Getting a good laugh at all you meat eaters judging the Chinese market from which this thing supposedly originated... hypocrisy at its finest.
It's been said that eating animals helped us humans evolve to what we are now... but it's ironic that our thirst for animal flesh is what will destroy us all in the end.
That's my rant for the day.
I think it's greed that will get us in the end, not being omnivores.

Potentially Snake Flu this time.
Quote:
Snakes often hunt for bats in wild. Reports indicate that snakes were sold in the local seafood market in Wuhan, raising the possibility that the 2019-nCoV might have jumped from the host species—bats—to snakes and then to humans at the beginning of this coronavirus outbreak. However, how the virus could adapt to both the cold-blooded and warm-blooded hosts remains a mystery.
