Short sleep syndrome

Defined as <6 hours of sleep but fully functional with energy. Came across this researching as the past month I’ve only hit 6 hours a handful of times but otherwise the average is around 4 hours. It’s weird but I’m keeping an eye on it. I expected insomnia from weed withdrawal and I did go through that misery the first 2-3 weeks but this doesn’t feel like that now. It simply feels like the norm now. Fully functional with energy on 4 hours sleep. I really need sports and weights back so I can do more self experimenting lol

I only get 6hrs or less of sleep a night. I’m drug free. Occasionally I’ll take a sleeping pill to get a full 8hrs. My father is the same way and he’s 75. He’s a beast.

Up to age 36 I always needed 8 hours +

When I started having troubles sleeping that’s when I started getting high to pass out. Still slept 8 hours but it wasn’t the restful deep sleep and no dreaming.

I dream again now and lucid ones can be quite intense. Just never thought I would be capable of operating on 4 hours or perhaps that’s an age thing or my brain really got scrambled from being high for 3 years lol

Fuck, I've been waking up at 4:30-5:30am randomly for no reason for the past 2 months. Used to get up at 6:30am.

It’s fkn weird cuz there’s even more hours in the day. Go to bed at 2am and wake up at 6am. It’s fked lol :nut:

ive noticed lately too that im only needing around 6 hours of sleep, only factor that changed is I'm taking some multivitamins and less physical activity although i try to do 1hr of cycling or exercise everyday

Don't know the full truth of course but you see all these celebs like Gordon Ramsay, The Rock, Arnold, etc. all talk about how they sleep so little everyday (3-5 hrs).

I find if I am invested and motivated on something, I don't need much sleep either. Kind of like the night before going to Disneyland syndrome, but every single day. Maybe it is something you train yourself mentally. How do single moms do it?

Only problem I could see is severe premature aging.

Pretty interesting video regarding this on Joe Rogan. Studies show more and more that marijuana products dont help. Although they can get you to sleep, does not get you into the restorative REM sleep.

Unable to nap. I try to meditate for 30mins in the early afternoon sometimes but I just get annoyed.

Just trying to get myself back to the pre weed days. Would love to hit 7-9hours on the regular again.

This is me 100%. Wofe is telling me that im snoring alot these days too, maybe sleep apnea. How much water do you drink @max_boost ?

I never used to drink water, like almost never, very unhealthy, I know. Then I started drinking a minimum of about 4 or 5 cups a day and I noticed my sleeping patterns change drastically.

However, ive laxed while being laid off(again) and im sleeping like shit again. As I get older I start noticing these patterns, water is where its at, at least for me.

Yeah I am finding the last 5 years or so I have been getting/needing less and less sleep. Some nights I am lucky to get 3 or 4 hours. I am not exhausted all day either. Just don't seem to be able to get to sleep and stay there. Sometimes I will wake up a couple/few hours after going to bed, just lay there tossing and turning for hours and then finally fall back asleep for another hour or two in the morning. Kind of annoying actually.

Having been on sleeping pills for 20 years I fall into this category. They don't work anymore and I usually only get 4hrs sleep. I find it affects my memory more than anything. Getting off the pills..

Was it Zopiclone? Doctors don’t even prescribe it anymore. I was on it for a couple weeks for vacation and it definitely did more harm than good.

Was so tired last night passed out at 10 and woke up at 4. Finally hit that 6 hours lol feel like a fkn senior with those hours haha

Yep, and Zolpidem for the last year which I just stopped. Also coming off any anxiety medication slowly

I usually don't have a problem falling asleep, but staying asleep seems to be a major issue. On average, I wake up about 3 or 4 times a night. I was referred to a sleep clinic at one point, but ultimately there was nothing they could really do as it didn't really affect my energy levels or my focus during the day. Ultimately, the doctor suggested that I maybe wasn't going to bed tired enough, so he told me to try going to bed a little later, which has helped some.

Breathing problems is usually what causes sleep issues. Properly draining sinuses before sleeping and training your body to induce it after waking up (if needed) can help. Of course if you have dry sinuses, don't do this. Get some Therabreath lozenges instead.

Totally underestimated in North American wellness. Everyone goes out for a jog and to the gym, but noone took a class on how to breathe.

You guys are gonna get degenerative brain diseases most likely from lack of sleep. Unless you are actually the .00001% of people who genetically can sleep short amounts of time with no ill effects.

Either way sleeping under 6 hours is something to be very concerned about.

Last night passed out at 10pm and woke up at 2am, usually that’s it and I’m fked for rest of the night but after some surfing including a 318am beyond post I fell back asleep for another 4hours ish. Jackpot. But that’s also probably because I didn’t sleep at all the night before :nut:

If one thing 2020 taught me is be grateful for good health. Other than this sleep thjng, zero allergies, zero underlying issues, just a little mentally disturbed that’s all.

Keep an eye on your blood pressure for now. Make time for exercise, even for a walk to decompress.

Also see if you are developing sleep apnea.

Beyond is so old balls now. Funny to see these kinds of threads compared to the stuff discussed 10+ years ago.

Society is so woke about mental health, workout, diet but sleep rarely gets talked about and when it does it usually comes in the form of humble brags about how little people get or how early they wake up. Just like the other parts of your health sleep needs a lot of discipline and to be personalized. Learned quite a lot from this book written by a 'sleep consultant' who works for European soccer clubs and pro cyclists. Most of it is straightforward and basic advice that I hadn't thought about much before. My biggest takeaways were...

- sleep hygiene i.e. no screens and devices or anything stimulating in the hour or so before bed. Basically wind down before going to bed. No screens or distractions in bedroom (personally I find TV in bedroom to be really tacky - I'm not a child that needs to fall asleep watching TV or staying in a cheap motel)
- discipline: finding your sleep schedule and sticking to it every night including weekends. This one I struggle with the most. I'm guilty of staying up as late as I can on weekends and sometimes work nights. When people say they get up early in the morning to be productive and get things done in peace and quiet I'm the opposite by staying up late to tidy things up and organize my thoughts and just getting some alone time
- adapting to your sleep chronotype i.e. whether you're more alert mornings/afternoons and trying to adapt your schedule around that so you can attack the most demanding tasks during your personal peak hours

I'm not as disciplined in those areas as I'd like to be and sometimes life gets in the way but its a good set of habits to get realigned when sleep schedule starts going off the rails like it has been during the holiday break.

Didn't read all of the posts, but I've been trying out Melatonin and it worked for me.

I usually pass out within the hour and stay asleep until the morning.

Life is nothing but some grand experiment to see what works at different stages lol

Melatonin, valerium, annual checkups, vitamins, check check check, tried it all. Really need the gym back more than anything. Nothing like pounding iron and skating around the ice with the boys.
The girl at doctors office said I had excellent blood pressure lol I giggled and she said it’s a good compliment.

I suspect anxiety and stress built up over the years has a lot to do with it hence I’m a minimalist now.

You need the D maxboost.

Due to my insane shift work I did for 15 years my sleep cycle was completely fucked. When I started a Mon-Fri job, I thought it would normalize over time, but it didn't, even after a year. I only did two things to make it happen. I started 3000iu's of Vitamin D (also good for keeping Covid from being too hardcore apparently), and also "Pavlov Dogged" myself, kind of like sleep training. I started going to bed and watching old tv shows that I've seen 1000 times over (ie The Simpsons) so required no thought. Now, if I wake up at 3am, I throw one of those shows on my tablet and pass out in 5min.

The only downside is that if I watch the Simpsons during the day, I start getting tired, lol.

Been taking 5000IU daily of the D for the past 10 years :D

I suspect a lot of it is still the body trying to regulate after 3 years of cannabis abuse

I do this with old radio shows (Dragnet, Nick Carter, Philip Marlowe, Johnny Dollar, that kind of thing). It helps to have something to shut my head off. Another thing I've done is found onboard camera footage from races, where you just hear the car noise and nothing else. Listening to that will put me to sleep almost immediately too.

And I found the same thing, where if I listen to an episode of Dragnet any time other than at night, I have a hell of a time staying awake.

Meditation music on YouTube seems to help

You can definitely build up functional sleep but 4-6 hours means its the most perfect sleep you will ever have. If you can do this, then yes, 4-6 hours is fine.

I have been having this issue for the past few months.
I find I can't only sleep with the TV running a pod cast or something in the background.

Interesting.

This has been me the past week or so. Wake up a couple times, each time I'll just watch another eps of the Arroverse and then go back to sleep. Lucid dreams seem to hit early morning. They feel so fkn real and weird that I literally wakeup. I wake up feeling exhausted if it's from a lucid dream. Too intense. Will keep monitoring things.

I know melatonin has been mentioned - but the DOSAGE is also key - 5mg does nothing while 10 is what works for me.

I used to struggle with restless legs and it (among iron and calcium) has been a HUGE help.

And some people need less melatonin as well. My wife went down from 5mg to 2mg and is much more pleased with the result.

Go see a sleep specialist, I ended at the peak pulmonary group (clinic was in the NW, and the respiratory doc was down in the SW). My experience...

I used to be fully functional (though just didnt feel well rested) on 4-6 hours of sleep in my 20s, believed it was just getting used to it from my university days. I'd be grumpy/tired/exhausted around 2pm and would need coffee/a nap to keep going. Took melatonin regularly (10mg) and even took a codeine based med for a while because it 'knocked me out'.

My wife kept saying I needed to go get checked for sleep apnea for 10+ years - wasnt just snoring, but was also i'd stop breathing and then gasp while asleep. Finally decided to take her advice and was diagnosed with extreme obstructive sleep apnea, with an AHI of 89. Doctor said that I have an apnea event (where I stop breathing/not get enough oxygen) 89 times an hour. I would *NEVER* get REM sleep because of that which is why i never felt well rested. He asked me: "When was the last time you remember even having a dream?" and I couldn't tell him at all. Explained to me all the long term health issues with OSA and what treatment options I had.

Ended up with a CPAP and for the first week of having one I would wake up between 1-2am fully refreshed. I guess that's why my body was used to for amount of sleep? Anyway, 3 years later now, I won't go to sleep without one and almost never need to an afternoon 'nap'. A 6+ hour sleep cycle now will get me easily thru the day without an afternoon nap/coffee.

In short - go see a sleep specialist.

Max is this a problem? You're up and ready to go, so why not do something with your time. If you're not sure what to do with that time, let's hop on a call and catch up, I'll light a fire to get after it.

I operated on 3-5 hours of sleep a night for 6 or 7 years while building my business, mostly because we had offices in India and North America. Now it doesn't require as much of my time, I find myself programmed to run on little sleep, but having to transition into other things with my time.

As everyone said, aging is a real concern when you run like that for an extended period. I'm 36 and probably look 45. It's the one thing my family would always comment on.

If you need to get sleep, see a specialist. There are so many variables that contribute to getting a restful night of sleep. I still say run with it and do something with that time.

Might as well blame the 5G radiation coming off your cellphone when you bring it to bed with you.

I was never a napper, but even a tiny nap fucks my sleep. Some people thrive on napping - but because they don’t sleep well??

So I did a water fast for just over two days last week.
I cut out sugar for a bit. The last two days I have slept like a baby.

I did a sleep study and lung function test at peak in crowfoot also. The new kit is much easier to sleep with (chest strap). No apnea here. Need to quit smoking tho!
