Lots of gun owners here but not as many hunters it seems but thought id ask anyways. Anyone else going for the rifle 1 hunt at the wainwright army base tomorrow?
Sounds like it's going to be a bit of a disaster with the wind/snow.

Is it a special tag or general?
Special tag. You need to apply specifically for on base hunts.
I didn't know about this one. I usually put in for a early winter CFB Suffield tag if there is one.
Wainwright is a bit outside my usual area.
Not this year but next year I should be good for Deer tags in there. Are you going for Moose or Deer? I heard that going for Moose is 10x easier

Suffield is a wild hunt. I got in the first year they reintroduced the tags. I'll never forget it, it was a super cool place to drive around. The hunting sucked though lol.
Yes next year. I didn't put much time in this year as i was busy at work. Saw 3 bull elk in there this year at my stand. Lots of bucks too. If any of you want to bow hunt or rifle and don't know the area we can go and set up in the spring/summer for the fall. I can fit 3 quads on my trailer.
I hunt in 306, but know of a solid 6x6 that came out of there. Might have broken in half when it all piled off the horse

Yes private. Grateful for the access
I went for Moose. Base was crazy this year more than ever before and this was my 6th or 7th time hunting. Moose are super straight forward at the base. If your there for rifle season 1 there's no reason it takes more then the first day to fill your tag. They said this year the Moose population was around 650.
Seasons this year went 5 days long(except elk)which I haven't seen before. They normally did 3 days per season in previous years. 3 deer tags for each deer hunter this year as well. 2500 Mule deer and another 2500 white tail were the estimated populations. 500km of roads and 150000 acres or so to hunt. For whatever reason they didn't disclose elk numbers which is odd as 3 years ago me and my hunting partner shot 2 elk out of the 10 or 12 that got taken. They had mentioned the elk were their biggest issue on the base at that time.
If you do go for deer they are everywhere and aren't super skittish. We saw 35 Mule deer before 11 am in the areas we were.
Overall fun hunt. IMO totally worth it. Only issue this year was the weather. They had more snow this year than ever before. Plows were getting stuck so they stopped plowing the roads. I got pulled out of a super remote road(khaki) in the middle of no where by some guys with a Calgary flames license plate. They really saved my day. I shouldn't have been off roading like i was in that area but hey... thankfully someone else was as well. I could have been stuck there all day as the military won't help you out.
Maybe an hour later I wrecked my truck and had to slowly drive it to wainwright for repairs as there is extremely limited towing services. I actually had to leave my truck in wainwright. Woops!!
