Invasive mushrooms what to do?!

I have a mushroom problem in my yard and not sure what to do. They are brown, grow in large clusters and keep growing back even as I pick them. What is the best way to deal with them? So far I've tried picking them before they grow too large in the hopes they stop coming back but so far it's not working.

I've recently noticed they are spreading through my back yard in many areas and concentrated in a certain area in my front yard. My neighbour went as far as to cut out sections of his grass but the mushrooms started growing just outside the area he cut out.

Replacing my entire lawn seems like a horrible idea for many reasons... So what else can I do?

I don't have any photos right now but I'll try and take some. I picked most of the large groups I saw growing. My thoughts were if I'm picking them like weeds they will eventually stop growing back but it looks like that's not the case as more and more spots seem to be sprouting up.

My neighbour thought it was related to the tree in his front yard and the roots but that can't be the case with all the spots in my back yard that are starting to appear.

You are watering your lawn too much, or too late in the evening. Spores also spread like crazy, so dont mow over them either. I noticed i stopped getting nearly as many on my lawn after i cancelled my Greendrop lawn maintenance. I think those guys were tracking the spores in accidentally from other peoples lawns.

^ Over watering is often the cause of mushrooms, but the OP says even the neighbors lawn has them.

When did the mushrooms first appear?

Also, mushrooms don't usually last for more than a couple of weeks.

It's because your lazy ass builder sodded over wood scraps in the yard. Either that, or you cut down a large tree and didn't excavate the root system. Picking the fruiting bodies won't do anything, you need to excavate the mycelium and its food source (buried wood).

Trust me, I know what I'm talking about.

Edit: All of the above answers are wrong, by the way.

Edit2: herbicide won't help because fungi aren't plants (they are different kingdoms entirely)

Its true, they come from organic matter like rotting wood, but overwatering your lawn will increase the decay rate of the wood giving them a feeding frenzy, as opposed to a slow decay where they only pop up once in awhile.

Also they can definitely be tracked by shoes. They dont last long, but it happens. So you're right and wrong, but still a douche by saying everyone else is.

No I'm 100% right. The only way to eliminate them is to... Eliminate them. The mushrooms you see are just the tip of the iceberg, you need to dig the actual mycelium and food up, or they will keep coming back until the food is gone.

FixedGear: my neighbor blames his tree roots for the mushrooms but they are growing every where in my back yard where there are no trees. Some taller shrubs back there but nothing like the tree in our front lawn.

Seth- the mushrooms on my front lawn have bean appearing in the front of my house since spring always in the same batch of grass. House is ten years old that i moved into in Dec. I have read watering too much will cause mushrooms to appear.. when i started watering my back yard more i saw the batches appear in many different spots in the back yard. The ones in my back yard are new in the last 3 weeks or so... Grass is most likely original from when the house was built but i would need to confirm for sure with the neighbor.

He said he has tried to cut out the grass a few times but no matter what he does they always grow back.

Watering can cause the shrooms to flush, but at the end of the day the ultimate reason they are there is because there is some food source buried there. In housing developments, it's typically scraps of lumber from when they built your house, although it could be tree roots, compost piles, old decomposing whatever.

Next time you're in the bush, dig up the soil and take a look in there. You'll see much of it will be covered with layers of filamentous white stuff. That's mycelium, which is the "body" of the fungus. It forms vast networks throughout the ground that form mutualisms with plant roots (mycorrhizae). The shrooms only appear for reproduction, but picking the shrooms won't get rid of the fungi. You need to excavate to get rid of them.

The mushrooms in my yard typically only grow in too places - one of the places is quite dry and doesnt hold too much water or get water that often. The house is 9 years old. Sod installed 9 years ago and mushrooms started appearing 2 years ago however we've only been in the house 3 years or so.

My lawn gets a few mushrooms each spring when the ground is really moist.

I break the stem at ground level and they don't grow back as the soil dries to a normal level.

That article was a bit helpful. They described my concern with some of my mushroom patches where they totally kill the grass.... they did mention pulling them which is what I've been doing.

Here are the stupid mushrooms i've been talking about..

I'll probably stick to pulling them for now and monitor how bad it gets compared to next year.

Like fixedgear said, they keep growing because there's something to feed on underneath the grass. Whatever it is, needs to be dug up or just live with them/minimize your watering to reduce optimal growing conditions for them.

Install sod over your grass.

Didn't read the article, but I've looked into this before as I had a shit ton in my yard, here's what I've gathered:

If it grows in a certain pattern or circle, you could have a fungal infection due to poor drainage or over watering, and eventually kill the grass, which is worst case.

In most cases of erratic mushroom growth all over, it is unsightly but isn't a big deal. It could be due to cold, heavy rain in the evening or lots of rain in general, which we've been getting. It will, however, just go away on its own. It'll sprout once in awhile in huge waves like it did mine.

Mushrooms are often good. It means the fungus is 'eating away' at decaying organic matter in the soil (pieces of wood, dead grass, thatch compostable waste etc) and actually puts nutrients back into the lawn.

I've just let them be, and it's always gone away without killing anything, in fact, they do more good than harm. They just look ugly.

I pulled some of mine up close to the edge of the grass and a tonne of that mycelium came with it - that was over a week ago and they havent grown in the same spot again.

My neighbour has had no luck getting rid of his in his front yard. He has dug them out and they continue to grow further away then previously... He thought he was okay but they literally started growing right on the edge of where he stopped digging them out.

I think with all his issues digging up batches or spots won't be effective. Replacing the entire yard is a huge waste as well.

I keep ending up with new areas they are growing every time it rains. Like Jordan said they are ugly as fuck.... Being my first spring in this house I'll have to compare this year with next year to see if they will ever go away.... I doubt they will though as they seem to be getting worst and worst this year.

It's called a Fairy Ring, pretty cool (google it). Yes you can just let it go and you'll be fine. If you want to absolutely get rid of it like OP, you're going to have to dig up the mycelium and food source. No getting around that fact. :dunno:

If you can pluck them before the veils break, they don't release spores, better chance of them not coming back, they will grow a few times but will stop fruiting after a few failed attempts at sporing. The main problem will be by mycium.

They will continue fruiting regardless. If anything, picking the shrooms will promote further fruiting as the fungus can provide more resources to new shrooms.

Pick them gently everyday, making a special effort to pull from the base of the stem, that's the best way to keep them from spreading. Do not mow over them, they can spread by exposure.

Try to reduce shade and moisture to the area.

Give it a yer, but be vigilant in picking them. If they're still there after next year, or if they get ridiculously worse, you might want to cut that area out and lay down new sod. If you do cut it out, poke around in the dirt for any food source like buried wood etc.

My last yard struggled with these off and on for a few years. By picking them everyday, I was able to reduce their numbers and eventually they went away. It sure was a pain though.

That's EXACTLY what I did, and the problem was solved.

Now replace everything you said about mushrooms, and replace it with "females". :)

Well back to the mushrooms, talk about good conditions for them! In 11 years I've never had one in the back yard, and found a dozen today. Then I went to the front yard and over 50! I just mowed 3 days ago and there wasn't a single one.

Guess I better rent a backhoe and dig the whole yard up, lol.

I just noticed today - I have HUNDREDS in front of my shed door that I've never had before. I get a handful under the evergreen tree and it doesn't seem any worse than usual though.

Personally my mushrooms have been better. I watched my neighbour attack his new ring with vinegar and they started to grow just outside the grass that he killed. This as on top of the ground he dug out twice.... The patch always moves and grows a few inches over.

Better dig up your lawn tho.. It's the only answer.

i have a lots of mushrooms this year, must be good year for those to appear. I have heard that spreading lime help to control environment (lesser acidity) and aerating spots where they appear. I did use nitrogen reach fertilizer as well. Otherwise, try to identify and see if edible and enjoy it (LOL).

Just reiterating my note from the last time this came up. Do not bother digging up your grass if you're noticing random mushrooms in random places....especially this year with all the moisture.

Mushrooms do not need burried wood to grow...it could be a concentration of thatch (i.e. dead grass) and a couple spores.

Just get out there and pick them every other day and they will start toi subside.

DO NOT EAT THEM.

Throw them in the gravel alley, firepit, or bucket.

Don't get crazy. Just pick them and they will slow down and eventually go away. I have a brand new lawn with a top layer of screened loam under it that i put down myself. I had mushrooms earlier this year and now they're gone.

This is the correct answer.

Mushrooms are spread by spores from the other mushrooms. Picking them is the most effective way to get rid of them.

Mowing over them is the worst thing you can do to keep them from spreading and poison/chemicals will likely just ruin your lawn.

accidently found a solution for mushrooms. I bought the little dragon from Lee Valley, for the weeds. I don't like how it leaves burn patches for two weeks buti thoughti would try it on the mushrooms and they were gone immediately, never to return.
