Has anyone ever added windows to their garage door? I would love to add a row of windows along the top of my door to let extra light inside. I'm having a hard time finding anywhere to buy them though. Anyone have any experience doing this? I know adding any weight to the door means that the spring tension will have to be re-adjusted.

You just need to get a new row that has windows and replace the one you have now.
You basically try to find a matching panel with windows and replace the top panel of the garage door.
i backed into my new garage door with tailgate down. dented one panel in one row. I would like to remove the panel. (2nd from bottom) move everything down and put windows in the top panel. Easy breazzy right?
Action Door Services Ltd [http://www.actiondoorltd.com/] replaced a door panel for us a few years back. They originally installed the door for the builder, so it was an easy choice.
Action Door let us borrow some samples when we were building, they installed our o/h door and have been out once to service it; they've been awesome.
Ok that sounds like a good option. Any idea on approximate cost? I'll contact them too, just wondering.

I'm not sure I would want people to be able to look in and see my shit. I got some LED panel lights from Costco for cheap that work great to light up my work area...
You can get frosted glass inserts or have a film added.
The added natural light is nice but we passed on the windows because they leak so much heat and create a lot of icing issues in the winter.
Not to mention the incredible safety risk by adding easy access to the safety cord with a simple rock and coat hanger.Quote:

Most door companies will sell you a new 500$+ panel with glass and swap it for another couple hundred. About the only person who would cut them in onsite was me. Having watched several companies pull panels recently to change the inserts on the windows - I expect nothing's changed there. (Inserts are called inserts for a reason)
I have the glass panels and it sucks. The garage gets hella-hot in the summer and frosts up like a mother fucker in the winter. I have an 8' door so I'm not as worried about people peaking in and my opener has an auto dead bolt so it's not really a security risk but it still sucks. I have been meaning to tint or get some frosting which should help but it's still a drawback and something to consider.
^Same here. In winter, there's constant condensation on ours. The builder only put in single glazed windows, not sure if double glazed would be that much better.Quote:

When I was building my garage I ordered a garage package and built the whole garage as per instructions, forgetting to account for the 1 foot curb wall, so when I went to install my garage door, it was 1 foot short...felt like an idiot. Returned the door and ordered another one with glass inserts. I do like them a lot, my garage is the only one that has them, and my garage is facing the back alley. It does allow a ton of light in so I like it, and the garage door is high, so can't see inside, but I don't live in the hood, so it's pretty safe anyways. It's true that in winter there is lots of frost around them from all the moisture from melting snow, but I don't know, doesn't bother me, I think the positives outweigh the negatives.
Those of you with condensation on the windows, is your garage heated?
