Wow, I was expecting $3.25-4M/AAV depending on the term.

That's a great deal of he wins and keeps the #1 spot.
Frolik's name is trending on twitter so i think they are trying to trade him.
Maybe lucic can top him up a mil or so
Marner has been signed. For a shitload of money... come on Tkachuk.
Lucic just did more in one shift than Neal did all of last year!
TERRIBLE.. he should NOT be the highest paid player on the flames..
Wrong way to look at it, as the cap increases every year player salary's obviously increase. You need to look at % of salary cap that year for value on a player. Tkachuk is only getting paid 250,000.00 more than Gio and Johnny Hockey, but compared to the cap when those contracts were signed to now, he is making less percentage for market cap then they are.
What are you supposed to do? Sign Crosby for 7 years and not pay any players more money than he makes a year for those seven years?
I like the contract.
How the business goes, if cap goes up x% then the next contract up is bound to exceed previous by said %
But he is one of the top players on the Flames and 21 years old, might I ask what value you think he should have signed for given his numbers?
Had the number approached 9.5... could be a different story. Now we will get to watch what he does for the next 3 years, if he improves his next contract will be much larger.
More AAV then I wanted to see, but Dubas really fucked the league over with his stupid overpriced RFA Matthews contract.
Personally, I wouldve been ok with around the $6m AAV, we literally have no cap space left and have to CUT a roster spot.. He was streaky, had TRIPLE the penalty minutes of Johnny, and 5x as many as Monahan and middle of the pack +/- numbers, just dont see him as a $7m player.
He had a bad streak from Jan - March but how much of that also had to do with the play of his linemates. When I look at him while he might get 62 PIMs I have a feeling he draws the most penalties on the flames (I tried to find some advanced analytics quickly but came short). What stands out to me is that he was +30 and +40 on Backlund/Frolik respectively while playing on a line that primarily takes on the opponents top line as a shutdown and counter punch. You also have to consider that he plays both sides of the ice, PP and PK, and is only getting better. Had it not been for that dry spell he probably would have been in the 90s for points.
JG went from 4 PIMs 2 years ago to getting mid 20s back to back seasons. Monahan is probably the furthest from aggressive you can get which is reflected in his PIMs total. The +- is a difficult stat with him given how much he played between lines on extra minutes and role he was asked to play.
If he was on the top line I would suspect his numbers would reflect more of that.
I don't think I'm alone in respect to his value, many of the "experts" were anticipating something in the 8.5-9ish range originally with a long term. Calgary is I guess gambling that he won't become a 1+pt/game player or were trying to crunch some short term numbers.
Sadly the sacrificing of a player has come against a few things. The Neal contract came back to bite big time and the Lucic trade is just... yah don't like to dive in on that. But having Valimaki get hurt and re-signing stone was unplanned and that alone had us under. Then you have the failed trades of Brodie that don't help, plus I keep hearing they have been trying to ship out Frolik to get the number lower. See how the rest unfolds. Worse case I could see them just burying Quine for a while until an injury happens and running 22 if they can't find a trade.
I'm okay with the $ amount and term, we're in a tight tight cap point at the moment and the term will let the team see how much he develops past his first few seasons to see if he warrants a big dollar contract in 3 years.
I went to the game yesterday.. It was fun.
Ive not been to the saddle dome in ages...
Why is the food so bad at the stadium...? Why why..? I had this weird dried up burger and with dried up chicken fingers...
Its just after 3pm and I still have not gone to the toilet. This is not normal.
It is just how the league works with when you signed your contract in relation to the salary cap that year, for instance look at the Avalanche. Nathan Mackinnon is a top 5 player in the league and he is getting criminally underpaid at $6.3M. Rantanen is about to sign and most likely make north of $9M, despite being less valuable a player.
Not necessarily Flames related...
Elliotte Friedman:
VAN is expected to put Sven Baertschi on waivers today. Adam Gaudette forced the Canucks to make some tough decisions.
Flames released their schedule for the retro jerseys. Flames will wear the Heritage Classic whites twice at home. Looking forward to it.Attachment 87716
The Retros and heritage classic whites should just be the two full time jerseys
100% shot % haha. Was wondering if we’d get a fucking SOG on a 2 man advantage.
Lucic already more valuable than Neal
can someone explain to me why the Av's second goal wasn't called dead because of the high stick?
https://www.nhl.com/news/rule-change...on/c-307950356
looks like they've changed the challenge rules. the teams can challenge any rule that is a black and white rule but if they're wrong, they get a 2 minute penalty. as many challenges in a game as you want.
How many times did Brodie bobble the puck play night? Lol.... the play near the end leading to the empty netter was probably the worst.
Try him as a forward already.
Does Lucic already have 6 goals in Calgary?
Oh, because Neal already has 6 goals in Edmonton. That's on the pace to beat his last year's total... Of 7...
That was the most brutal 30 mins of hockey in the first and 2nd period. Comeback effort was solid, that 3rd goal was awesome. Should've been a high stick, but non reviewable just like the other night. Lose some win some. Fucking Bennett and penalties.
I like James Neal, hated the trade. :(
Felt like watching two different teams, maybe everyone had a late alarm yesterday... jeez
I think both goals were high sticks so that one didn't bother me. Bennett needs to tighten up that shit.
Neal is benefiting from McJesus big time, he assisted all 4 goals. The trade is still a puzzler. But so far I'll give props for Lucic stepping up, I though he was a huge change last night. Mcdermott was all over Tkachuk and then Lucic goes and fights him. Gets the team going and took the guy off who is going after one of your best player (yes despite people bitching about Chucks contracts I think he's proving to be one of the best players/lots of skill).
Not like he's worth his AAV but if he stands up for his teammates all years and protects JG/Chuck etc might work out? :dunno:
2 shots in the first period.... BRUTAL. Then ol'Looch punching that guy in the face got things going. Matty stepped up big in the second and third period. I was down by the glass and loved seeing him going after Doughty then Clifford trying to get in there and be someone. I am a little disappointed in Hamonic for not going after Kopitar (maybe.... could have been someone else) for laying on Rittich and shoving him in the third period there. All in all it was actually a much better game than I expected if you ignore the first period.
Johnny needs to stop being so afraid of any sort of physical contact what so ever. I get he's a small guy but fuck, he won't even throw a hit himself. In the second period in the Kings end he basically refused to shoot the puck despite being on Campbell's left hand side with no one around him. He's such a frustrating player to watch.
Got so lucky, puck almost came off his stick on the backhand. Entertaining game, I was happy to see the Flames actually came out of the gates hot.
Pretty fun game to watch, Flames showed signs of skill and chemistry from last season...but at the same time it was painful. We should have been way ahead of the Panthers all game, no way it should have gone to a shootout. Can't quite put my finger on what's wrong, to me it looks like defensive breakdowns. I like Rittich, I like his competitive attitude, but I don't think it's enough to take us far this season.
I think it was a pretty ugly game for both teams. Just glad we came out ahead.
Was at the game, great entertainment! Got our money's worth for sure!
I've mostly stopped watching regular season hockey because it's boring and mostly pointless.
But I watched half a period tonight and this team is basically trash.
I think the last time they were good was in February sometime?
Flames are back to being pretenders.
Johnny, Monahan and Chucky are soft as baby shit. Those three are not capable of carrying this team anywhere. Combine that with Brodie’s intelligence, Bennett’s toe drags and Lucic’s foot speed and the flames are FUCKED.
I'm thinking about stopping watching... they could win every single for the rest of the season and it wouldn't mean dick all if they don't show up for the playoffs. I get why people stop watching.
I stopped, if I do happen to catch it maybe I’ll check it out but normally turn it off as soon as the other team scores cause there’s a good chance they just quit playing at that point
That goal... Wow!
What a game... well third period and overtime, but huge to come back on the road. Not once, but twice. Hope this game can bring the boys together and get them on a bit of a roll.
like last year's Pitts game, hope this would jump start the season. Wicked fun to watch tonight
What a goal lol

So I guess Flames games are getting a little more exciting these days! Gotta watch the whole game though... well maybe just start after the 2nd intermission.
Happy to see them win like this again though... builds character and experience.
At the game tonight, was bitching how shitty the game was and we need a Halloween miracle. Fuckers pulled through!
Yea that game was a snooze-fest for 50 minutes.
What the fuck game was that?!:rofl::rofl:
Garbage.
No way Treliving does nothing.
Trade? Coach fired? Tre gets fired himself?
Reminds me of when Phanuef got traded for spare parts.
Didn't Tre just get an extension? lol.
Peters probably should go, but really they should tart trading assets.
Aren't we giving these clowns a new building too? haha.
Will the flames ever score again???
Yes, I'm predicting sometime near the end of the 2nd.. probably Luc to Ryan.
Every year I get seduced into thinking the Flames are a good team. This year (so far) appears to be no different. Unless they figure out their shit sooner than later, there won't even be playoffs to think about. The only thing we can hope for is the team getting hot at the right time with a late season push and a fight for a playoff spot that carries into the spring, just like the Blues last year.
This team as constructed is dead in the water. It's window has closed.
Has their window closed? Was their window ever open? LOL
The team has barely changed from last season (Neal for Lucic and Talbot for Smith) and somehow we fall off a cliff. Maybe they were just pretenders last season and they fooled us all?
And lots of blame to go around, when every player outside of Chucky and Rittich are having significantly worse seasons this year compared to last.
Johnny Gaurdreau a -10 with only 5 goals. Not producing anything offensively right now. Has been awful.
Sean Monahan a -10 with only 5 goals. Invisible most games. Has been awful.
Giordano forgetting how to win a norris or play defense really at all. Has been awful.
Backlund not being able to score. Missed open nets multiple times and generally no finish at all. Has been awful.
Brodie with bonehead passes multiple times a game. Has been awful.
Bennett moving one step closer to being a complete bust.
Lucic being Lucic.
Frolik with 1G + 2 A in 22 games this season. Also posting up a -12.
Tobias Rieder with lots of speed and zero offense. 1G + 0A in 17 games this season. No wonder the Oilers dumped him.
And Mark Jankowski with 0G + 0A for 0 points in 21 games this season. Also posting a -10 currently. And hasn't been on the ice for a Flames goal yet this season. WTF man, do something!
There's your summary.
The scariest stat is that they haven't scored an even strength goal in something like 250 minutes.
Did you mean hadn't? Both last night were even strength.
This team continues to shock and awe us
Needs more Babcock.
Peters is a babcock-esq coach. I honestly think the message he would send would not work.
What we really need is a shake up in players. Bring up a few of the fast playmakers from he farm like Gawdin and Phillips. We don't need rinaldo/reider/jankowski/lucic etc. What we need is speed and skill right now, we need a team using their speed. The flames look so slow this year.
Yup, 100% agree.... we need some young, fast, and SOBER players.
I heard about a month ago from a friend of a friend who's in the media department of the Flames that there is a huge locker room divide between the older guys (ie: Gio, Hamonic & Backlund) with the younger star players about their level of commitment. They had it out with each other and it wasn't good.
Sure, it is all word of mouth, but there are enough people that have witnessed guys like Johnny skiing his way through downtown that there is definitely truth to it.
An interesting tidbit about Taylor Hall, since i have seen his name mentioned in potential trade talks with the Flames. One of the big reasons he got shipped out of Edmonton was because he had a big opioid problem. After he lost his dad, he grew very depressed and he relied on opioids to numb the pain. It got so bad, the Oilers ended up putting him on IR although he was perfectly healthy. He was spotted a few times at bars drinking alone during home games, which is when the whole issue became more than what the Oilers wanted to deal with.
Since when does coke slow someone down? Fuck I'd say the problem with the flames is not enough cocaine.
I believe he has more of a Telly from Kids syndrome and it was (or still is) just a matter of time before that explodes.

Edmonton already got Prong'd by loose wieners in the past...
