The article mentions "building equity" (implied to be through making mortgage payments), but unless I missed it, the analysis omits a key factor in the rent vs. buy calculation - price appreciation (or lack thereof).
This calculator is pretty handy - nytimes.com/interactive/2014/upshot/buy-rent-calculator.html?hp&_r=2. With the advantage of hindsight, the numbers are pretty jarring for Calgary. Over the last 10 years, S&P has returned an average of 15% annually, while the Calgary market has returned, about 0%... Factor in home ownership costs and the fact that rents have declined probably 20% (or 2% / year) and the numbers skew even further away from the buy side.
