Are short-term Nanny contracts a thing?
Wife may have a work opportunity that could work out very lucrative for us, but it would require a 6 month commitment of essentially a 9-5 M-F role for training and such like before becoming more flexible where she could be home for school runs and stuff and work weekends when grandparents can assist
Looking at it as sort of short term "struggle" for long term gain as having to pay for that kind of childcare would almost certainly result in a net-loss for the 6 months
Is there something else we could look at that I'm missing?
I thought Kindergarten was full time, but apparently it's only half days which is total BS imho (fuck CBE but i'm not baller enough for private) so it would be pre-school runs for the twins first thing, school run for the boy afterwards, collection and care of the boy at half day, collection of the twins and care for all three for a couple hours until wife returns
My slightly erratic schedule is supposed to be 30on 30off, but its been known for emergency call outs to happen and I don't like to turn down that OT/DT
This is all very preliminary and cursory investigation right now, just wondering if I'm being too top level and haven't thought of stuff (cos to me it seems really easy)
Pay for after-school care, don't be poor.
Is Kindergarten not full time everywhere? I thought it was
Put the kid in a full-day daycare instead of CBE kindergarten. 7 am to 6 pm if you need it.
We did the before/after school care for 1/2 day kindergarten and now grade 1. It works ok - tried a nanny a couple times and both times had issues.
Some public school kindergarten is full day. But that's not the norm.
also, kindergarten is not mandatory, and honestly, there's NO BENEFIT to a kid to go to kindergarten over a daycare. ZERO. in fact, daycare is better.
Interesting, i thought Kindergarten was where you went when you were 5...like your first year of proper school
Is Grade 1 at 6yo the start of proper school here?
Eeek...
that's CBE propaganda.
No kindergarten is full time as its not a required program so funding is only for part time.
I am in Okotoks with kindergarten/grade 1 age kids. Last year my kids school was full days tuesday, wednesday and thursday but started 3 weeks after everyone else and ended 3 weeks earlier than any other program and had so many more PD days than everyone else. Other schools were full days but 2 days one week and 3 days . This year they have 1 program that is full time (out of ~7 kindergarten programs) and I think next year the french immersion school is be going full time if they can lock in additional funding. We have a friend who is a kindergarten teacher here and she says every few years they will have a full time program but its not permanent. Not something you can hang your hat on more than 6 months ahead of the school year.
If you think half days are annoying, wait until you see how many PD (and other bullshit) days kids have now.
Even full days are like 9-3.
I have no experience with CBE, but I completely disagree... Our kids all started with full day kindergarten, which allowed them to not only build friendships with kids they'll be entering grade 1 with, but also familiarize themselves with the school, staff, procedures, etc.
I can't think of a single reason to not want to introduce your kids to that asap, but again, YM with CBE MV...
We did full time kindergarten… private school
Daycare is like private kindergarten.
