I've noticed this as well, I'm doing my co-op term at Statoil and I'm surprised how little some engineers with 10+ years of experience know about the field operations.
Don't you need to be admitted into law school and the mba program in order to take the jd/mba? Sounds like a lot of work :) At least this is the case at the U of C.
