Well, yeah.
I know there are a lot of stay-at-home Mom type client's I could take on during the day time if I get laid off. I hear they're more enjoyable clients to deal with than the fat hags I'm used to shagging in the evening.
Funny, a friend of mine finally found a new job last month after looking for a couple of years. Salaries are still pretty high, although not ludicrous I suppose. The company apologized for the compensation because it was 30% less than what they used to pay for the position, but it still ended up being almost six figures.

As ExtraSlow said its just Wood now. Wood Group Mustang was a division of Wood group when they bought Mustang, it was their oil and gas division. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
AMEC bought Foster Wheeler a few years back for a huge sum then basically sold to cover their debt. Every quarter since before the FW deal they have been told "layoffs are coming" and sometimes there is, sometimes there isn't. Now that they are officially Wood (with legal entity name changes in the works), a bunch of the groups within the North American team have been told that they will be going to a reduced work week coming up. Typically around christmas they are told the office is closed for two weeks so they can choose to either use two of their weeks of vacation or take unpaid time off. I'll never ever understand that.
When I first graduated working for a consulting company like AMECFW or Golder seemed like it would be a sweet gig with tons of exposure to different things, but the stress of working for a company where it they make you feel like your employment could be day to day is so stressful and I'm not even the one getting a paycheck from them!

Contractors make big $$$ so as long as you're proactive, build a rainy day fund, you can give zero fucks when you get the boot haha. Works well if they're DINK too.
4% pay cut, that's what it means if you want to take vacations other than those 2 weeks. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

This bring up the question though that I have been struggling with: Is it better to be told you will be out of a job in the coming months, or to just get laid off? On one hand it would be nice to have a bit of warning to get your things in order but how productive are you going to be, and how good with morale be knowing you don't have a job soon? On the other hand if you just get laid off you do not have time to figure out your affairs but you're also not going to work counting down the days. My company and my wife's company each subscribe to one of those methods and I can see the validity in both but at the same time I don't understand why the "other side" would do it that way.

That sucks.
Head to the bank, get your things sorted out financially. Maybe refinance mortgage early or increase your line of credit before bank gets the news.
Potentially try to negotiate the severance payment into the new year. Drop your tax bracket.
Its a good question. I guess it depends on how one handles the shock.Sorry to hear this sir. Hope it all works out.

I had a friend that had a steady job and transitioned to Oil and Gas. The money was waaay better but the oil chock and losing their jobs that afternoon was too much. She mentioned they would not be working in Oil and Gas again. The shock of losing work/income right away is a bit too much.
That being said my current role is not in oil and gas. Its a stable industry that is run by a bunch of numptys.
For me I guess knowing helps a bit. I can plan and think things through logically.
Thanks for the support guys. I pretty much have to stay in my job for the next three months to get the severance. I thought about SAIT and learning for a new career. But I can't go to college for two years and pay a mortgage. I have no support network here.
