I managed 26 nights which is about average I think. 4 weekend or long weekends and then a 2 week trip.
One thing you shouldn't do though is figure out how much it costs you per night to camp. When I sold my last trailer, I was like "losing $10K over 4 years on a new trailer isn't bad". Then I figured I probably camped 25 nights a year over those 4 years so 100 nights which makes it $100/night for depreciation! Not even considering storage, maintenance, added gas when towing and then the campsite. Probably costs anywhere from $150-$200 per night then. That made me sad lol
So I try not to think about that anymore.
You have kids? Because staying at a hotel with kids is really expensive. Makes RVing way cheaper, esp. if you prepare your own food. Also being out in nature can't be beat.
you need to approach the same way as with economics of machine. So take 5 year horizon, say normally you would go on average 20 day on holidays a year, say $150/day on average hotel cost gives you approx. ~3000/year add to it cost of food not eating at restaurants say for family of four close to $200/day and your cost would be closet to #50 a day prepping yourself that si another 2500-3000 so total of $6000/year, consider that camping is not free so you have cost say average $40/day so total ~800/year so net savings should be around ~5000/year, take 5 year and it ends up $25000. I am not including travel cost as this would be same no matter what accommodation you are using. You take RV cost and subtract 25000 and check what is "salvage" cost of 5 year old RV that you would sell after 5 years and see if you are loosing money. I did calc like this and figured if I use it for two weeks, and keep it fot ten years I am breaking even on my unit. So far used more that two weeks a year.
Where are you staying that costs $150/day for a family? You can't even stay in Edmonton for that cheap. Banff for instance is around $300/day in low season.
Well, it's official, thanksgiving forecast is too cold for kids and wife, my season is over. Winterizing today.

Bought the "better" propylene glycol antifreeze instead of cheap ethanol type this year. Supposed to have less taste and be better for seals. Blew with air afterwards as well.
Ethanol stuff on left, propylene glycol on right. Both from Canadian tire.

Did you figure in the additional cost of basically setting up a smaller second household - another set of dishes/cutlery/cookware/linens/etc? Or do people just move their regular household stuff into their RV when they go out camping. What about the cost of a vehicle capable of towing said trailer as opposed to a more economical SUV or sedan/wagon?This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Just asking, note that I've never owned a RV and don't ever see myself getting one. My wife and I would rather book a cabin or a motel/hotel - just more our thing. I'm not knocking anyone who does the RV thing but it's not our thing.
Will fuck off, again.
A big factor for me, there are not hotels at most places I camp... but staying in hotels and camping are too very different experiences and it’s not for everyone.
I've never done the math, but in my case I am certain hotels woukd be cheaper, because we'd travel a hell of a lot less.
You can do the rv lifestyle very cheaply if you want, but not many people do.

And I camped 32 nights this year
My wife.is very sensitive to water taste, and we drink the trailer water. So I go to further lengths than most people. In terms of effectiveness, the cheap/readily available stuff seems to works fine.

Ive done the math for when we visit my parents on Van.Island. It costs us $500 more to bring the trailer and camp there and back again, vs hotels and dining out.
However, the cost of sleeping in our trailer while visiting vs in their shitty spare bedroom is priceless.
yeah its really nice to have your own space, and if the trailer can be parked at your event or family's property so you don't have to drive back and forth to a hotel is great as well. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
