Also, why does CBC keep quoting some axe grinding dude law professor. Like who is Ubaka Ogbogu? haha

Trust CBC to take a story that could be interesting with proper reporting and turn it into their typical partisan hackery.
I made the mistake of watching the news the other day and it seems media will put a camera in front of basically any hack with a medical degree to talk about the disease.

Monday prior to the Kenney update CTV had some random palliative care doctor from Vancouver and someone who’s gender I couldn’t make out from a family practice in Ontario to comment on Alberta’s pandemic response. Huh?

I sure hope the media never calls me to comment on what I think of the structural integrity of a bridge in Quebec.

And which is why Chinese do checkpoints instead so you can't go anywhere without your phone.
Liberal Government issued huawei 5G phones with pre-installed tracker apps? Most of the big clusters and traces would go to the NE anyway.

As someone who's been sucked into commenting on a topic for the media and then seeing how they twist those comments and present them out of context...just don't talk to them. I had to fall for it twice before I learned and now when I'm asked it's just a (sometimes) polite "no comment".

I don't see the issue with this at all. Hinshaw's job is to make recommendations to the Premiers office in which the Premiere is to ultimately make the decision. We voted in UCP/Kenny not fucking Hinshaw.

And for the record I have been ultra critical of the province making stupid "recommendations" and then criticizing people for not listening. So I 100% support the recent tightening up of the rules. About damn time if they want people to listen and follow the rules.

I would be more worried if there wasn't a robust debate occurring in gov't over the pandemic. I would also be worried if the civil servants got to make all of the calls instead of the people we hired/elected to do that job.
Absolutely this. One of the anecdotes was that Hinshaw opined that mass asymptomatic testing was wasteful and we should be only doing symptomatic testing, so Kenney asked for a presentation outlining the pros/cons of both strategies. People are acting like this was a request only some fascist dictator would make, instead of an entirely reasonable request from a guy trying to make an informed decision.

(Of course, if you look at the testing numbers over time it's clear that Kenney took her recommendation after initially trying the asymptomatic testing. She must be good at PowerPoint.)

The whole "Good Hinshaw vs Evil Kenney" thing smacks of people who feel the need for real life to have perfect heroes and loathsome villains just like their comic book movies so they don't have to think about nuance.

Kenney needs to hire PLTR to run the contact tracing.

Canada still on track for January 2021 vaccine rollout, despite domestic dose disadvantage: feds

OTTAWA -- The federal government is still eyeing January 2021 as the start date for when people in Canada will begin to receive COVID-19 vaccines, despite frustration and concerns levelled at the Liberals by the opposition on Wednesday about Canada’s position in the queue to receive doses.

“At the beginning of next year, in January of 2021, assuming those approvals are given… Canadians will be able to start being vaccinated,” Queen’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc said in an interview on CTV’s Power Play.

The approvals he is referencing are Health Canada approvals, which will be required before vaccine doses are doled out.

This kind of talk would get you downvoted into oblivion on reddit subs. Pretty sure most of them are bots anyway, if not then I'm really scared for the future of society.

The plan is to start bringing cardiac and neurology procedures offline (emergency only) because those are the most ICU intensive parts of a hospital, so the staff can be reallocated from them to Covid ICU. Then down the line until they run out of the trained staff that are trained in ICU procedures and equipment.

There's really no indication that there was a plan for staffing 600 beds, just that they could equip 600 beds. It's not a direct 1 to 1 swap from a regular bed to an ICU bed, so regular staffing in a hospital isn't enough if more beds switch to ICU.
Thanks. I think there is typically 160 icu beds in the province, after they cancel all non emergency surgeries (which would suck) they could have 140 dedicated to covid? That cbc article makes it sound like we are inundated in the ICU, and I want to know if its true or what sacrifices we are close to being forced to make.

I've seen 700, 200, 173, 272....seems the media is just chucking numbers out there for the actual amount of ICU beds. The only somewhat solid number seems to be that 70 were set aside just for Covid, which we are just about touching.

Edit: This AHS link says 700

Does a R value even matter at this point when testing resources are maxed out and contact tracing is no more?

It matters because Kenney said we need to get under 1 to have restrictions lessened at all in order to have christmas with our families (papaphrasing).

    Found this

    https://rt-canada.ca/

Looks like we average about 1.05 although the data is about a week old.

We were never under 1 since May. And somehow we get a magical under 1 by Dec 18th with cases numbers at all time high?

If active cases are net dropping week over week isn’t that all that defines a sub 1 Ro?

So we just need fewer daily cases than people die or recover?

That doesn’t seem like an unattainable goal before Christmas to me if we actually refrain from social gatherings.

Actual # of cases isn’t a factor in R is it?

A policy/behavioural change will have an instantaneous impact on R.
