I chuckle that people think having a tv on the main floor is any different than mindlessly gazing at their phones or iPads even laptops there.

People like to draw the most interesting lines in the sand.

Phones are like smoking, I don't allow them in the house. I go outside for a 5min internet every hour or so.

I miss the wood burning fireplace in my old house. It saved us when we were without power for 3 days after a winter storm. If I had a full weekend at home without work, I could keep it lit all weekend and the furnace wouldn't run at all even deep into the minus 20's. It had a ducted jacket around it with vents in the wall, put the ceiling fan on low blowing downward and the whole house temperature was very even.
I am going to add a wood burning stove to the house I am in now, I just have to come up with a decent chimney path.

If I ever get baller enough for a vacation property, I'm getting one without cellphone service or televisions. Probably will have a fireplace though.

Got 2 fireplaces in the house and don't really give a shit about both of them.

You know what I want? I want a built-in torch on my stove where it has a flexible retractable metallic hose that I can pull out and sear my sushi and creme brulee
You're Asian. Of course you have one of those butane burners for DaBinLo.
Get one of these. It's like $10 at T&T

Currently building a house for a client who has 3 fireplaces, one wood burning & two gas fireplaces.

Wood burning is in living room, gas in master & gas on deck.

    - - - Updated - - -

Just finished building and selling this to a client. We did one massive 50” gas fireplace on the main. No TV above.

We have a gas fireplace and before kids I had it on at least 4-5 days a week during the winter. My favorite thing to do was put on record, pour a bourbon and watch the fire. My toddler burnt his hand on it last year so it hasn't been on much since. I can't wait until they are a bit older and understand hot = don't touch.

A fireplace in my office would be amazing for WFH

EDIT: to answer OP all other things being equal I would take a house with a fireplace vs one without

You mean you wouldn't want to sit on the couch and watch TV through your vase full of sticks?

It’s that woodsy feeling you come to expect from a place called Aspen

I don't want to criticize but that normal sized TV looks tiny in that gigantic space. Much like when I'm standing next to my pal Jerome.

Having a tv on constantly is really annoying to me. I can watch tv, or talk to people, but not both.
    My wife fuckin hates it

bonus rooms are complete nonsense and a waste of space IMO
Other than the kitchen the bonus room is our second most used room. The kids can watch movies as loud as they want in there while me and the wife are on the main doing stuff and when the kids go to bed it doubles as our laundry sorting facility

and I did not have the only say in the matter (most people just want it done ASAP and don't care about quality).

If anything we made a better decision because we had a consensus and were all on the same page.

Samsung Frame solved the "large tv over fireplace" problem. Most guests do not have a clue that its a TV as they walk right by it.

We use it nightly during fall/winter after baby goes to sleep. Linear fireplace like 88crx has. Don't think I would really want any larger.

I'd still rather it be closed in and give the option for another bedroom, and if you want you can still use it as a bonus room, it's not like the second floor ever really has an "open feeling" anyway

We like the look of the fireplace but don't really care about the heat so we went with 2 electric ones in the house, one upstairs and one downstairs. This one is 60 inches, the one downstairs is 48.

For those who have wood burning fire places, does your insurance know? And any idea how much it affected the rate? We have 2 wood burning, 1 up and 1 down, and don't use them because I didn't tell insurance about them. Also, 2 little kids. Would like to start when the kids get older

I told them, but I also told them it is not a primary heat source for the home because it’s not.

Hard to say how it affected my rates.
