Yah I was going to ask the same thing, your car should have wireless apple car play and android auto....
It has both car play and android auto, but the rest of the "apps" don't work without the data plan. Which is fine, just means the rest of the infotainment system and features are useless. Why even have them was the point I was trying to make.

Yeah, my wife's Buick runs Android Auto and that is it. She has no OnStar or any other data package and it works just fine.
With android auto, do the rest of the infotainment built in apps like spotify and maps work?

I have an iphone and car play obviously does/has everything but I have to use car play itself within the app. If I try to use the apps without car play they don't work without the data plan.

Which other apps are you looking to use? When you're using car play you can use Google Maps, Spotify, etc. and it obviously uses your phones data.

She just uses Android Auto and the apps in that. If you aren't using the CarPlay or Android Auto then you would need a data plan to stream music.

I don't know much about infotainment systems, and even less about how various manufacturers implement things, but I was under the impression that once you had android auto running, it was all phone data and phone apps. If GM has some other apps that exist outside that ecosystem, that sounds like a GM issue. What apps are these anyway?

Although now that I think of it, GM selling data plans makes a ton if sense, could be a huge profit centre for them.

They do have data plans through OnStar. My wife had a free trial with WiFi and data for 6 months. She never signed up again and just uses her phone data now.

As a side note I can't believe people actually use carplay without stabbing themselves in the eye. What a piece of shit compared to Android auto.

On the new GM vehicles with rear seat entertainment, you need to use the vehicle data to stream movies and such on the tv's it's absolute BS. It wont allow you to use phone data. I think you can download onto a thumb drive and watch that way, but the integration is shit.

Apple and Android ecosystems are so wildly different, you don't ever want to swap back and forth.

    - - - Updated - - -

rear seat entertainment has been a terrible idea for a long time. Worse experience, and ten times the price, of just buying each kid a cheap tablet.

I just laugh when my wife plugs in her iPhone when we're going somewhere. I'm familiar with it. It sucks.

What's it like being a peasant with green messages instead of the blue ones we have in the first world?

Never used android auto, carplay.... works.... but I don't love it. Outside the car play ecosystem I'd like to just push a button on the screen and have it do what its supposed to do without the need for a data plan that runs off the same cell towers that my phone does. I want to push spotify and have my library there, not wait for my phone to connect to car play, get to the spotify app, sometimes have to press play from my phone directly, then go back a screen in car play to open maps if its not one of the 3 apps that apple deemed as favourites. Its just annoying and inconvenient to have to go through all that when the home screen itself has all the apps you need but aren't accessible.

First world problems are the worst.

Maybe I will have to check out a peasant phone one of these days. Who am I kidding? Why would I leave what works for a less stable, less secure UX?

If you phone is how you signal your status, then that's a pretty sad comment on the fragility of your ego.

iPhones bring out peoples' inner 14 year old. Inferior? Sure! As long as my friends have it!

    This is very inaccurate.

Android devices cast wirelessly to the rear entertainment system.
Apple you just need lightning to HDMI adapter.

Can download shows/movies to your device at home so no data connectivity is needed at all.

    Beats having piles of DVDs
