    excellent update today:

    tldw:

despite the high impact of covid-19 in spain, prevalence estimates remain low and are clearly insufficient to provide herd immunity. This cannot be achieved without accepting the collateral damage of many deaths in the susceptible population and overburdening of health systems. In this situation, social distance measures and efforts to identify and isolate new cases and their contacts are imperative for future epidemic control.

Looks like the USA will have to go full online for post-secondary. Trump intends to send all foreign students to their home country, including Canadian students.

Arguably, there is no reason to pay a high tuition if you are full online. I can imagine several prestigious institutes of higher learning will declare bankruptcy. Will education suffer? I don't think so. There is something to be said to be in a physical classroom, but no doubt that listening to a lecture online is of no difference to listening to a lecture where the professor is 30 feet away. Most if not all material "textbook" knowledge was digitized a long time ago.

Damn, I have a land crossing planned soon and was going to get a test on the way out of town to prove I’m negative at the border. Sounds like they are still requiring 14 day quarantine?

Do they take your contact info and do any verification that you’re following the quarantine?

They call you and ask if you’re at home.

And a series of repetitive health questions and they will only talk to the one person in the family who filled out the form. I asked if I didn't have to isolate since I am ineligible to answer the questions. Unclear response from the English-as-a-fourth-language ass-handler on the call.
Two missed phone calls in one day and they call the PoPo.

Probably no way to get this type of data reliably, but I wanted what the "all-cause mortality" is this year vs previous. It's an abnormal year for so many reasons. Maybe an insurance company would find this somehow.
This showed up on my linkedin feed, and apparently the data is from the CDC, although there's no link (Edit: Link below now). it does show an increase in "excess deaths" but that excess is trending downwards towards so far. Obvisouly, the recent surge in cases COULD change this, although the death rate is decreasing, so maybe not?

Apparently negative tests don’t mean shit anyway because of the high false negative rate. It cannot detect on the first day at all, and even 5 days in, there is a 20-30% chance it will say no infection even if there is.

There is no personal benefit to getting tested regardless of your symptoms.

Some places will let you travel there without an arrival quarantine if you provide a negative test (like Hawaii starting Aug 1), which would be a pretty big benefit for some people who want to travel IMO.

I hadn't heard that, and that sounds like a sensible plan. I haven't heard of Canada implementing any rules like that for returning home though, which still makes leisure travel unappealing to me.

It's relatively new (to my knowledge anyway). So as long as you are OK with a possible quarantine when you return home and can work from home, it can open up some travel options.

The test has to be done within 72hrs before landing there as far as I know. Having it done earlier doesn't count.

And I wonder what kind of proof you need.

We know you have that, why are you posting it in the Covid thread?

Good article summarizing the state of things (in the US anyways):

I heard hawaii is looking at calling this off because of the uptick, super frustrating as I have plans to go there in late October

Florida had a rough night. You could blame it on the older populace, or the obesity, but I will blame it on being so close to ocean level. Not as much of the superdamaging supercleansing UVC light makes it down that far. And this is a bat disease.

I haven't heard that, but it makes sense if it's getting worse. Hopefully you can still go! We hard our April trip cancelled so we want to re-book ASAP too.
