    Default Windshield Replacements

Any go-to's for a replacement? Dont really 'want' to replace mine this time of year (and will try to delay to spring), but it's getting a bit bad with 3 big cracks. Got a quote from Cal-Alta that is 320 minus 120 if i bring in a food drive item, or 230 from Glassmasters

any preference? Tacoma with no fancy do-dads on the windshield

If it's a lease by chance, check what the dealer wants for a replacement. With my lease, a replacement windshield is half of what it costs a glass shop to do it if I do it when I return the car so I'm not getting mine replaced until then.

Glassmasters will install a YXG windshield unless you ask (and pay for) otherwise. You don't want a XYG. Don't be fooled by the "transport Canada has minimum standards blah blah blah" line. Yeah there's a standard, that doesn't mean other manufacturers don't make them better than bare minimum standard.

Cal Alta is saying they only use 'original quality' glass, whatever that means?

    That means non-OEM lol.

Last replacement in the TLX I used OEM (all that was available) and it was still wavy.

It means they are using the cheapest substitute they can possibly find from their suppliers to maximize profit

XYG/Benson glass is usually pretty wavy. Personally, I cannot stand distorted glass so I usually go with the next step up like PGW/Pilkington.

Yup I've seen some crazy waves in XYG glass and it really throws off your vision if it ends up in your peripheral.

It also chips and cracks like crazy. My Audi had OEM when I bought it, and it survived 7 years of Deerfoot with only one chip, even though I was hit with plenty of rocks. I only changed it because of the pitting from winter sandblasting. I put in a XYG and it had 3 large chips after two months.

Similar storey with my Saabaru, though I didn't own it as long.

Colleague got a wavy glass from them and they took $100 of the bill and he was ok with that.

With today's camera/collision assist/lane keeping/etc do you guys know if low quality glass makes a huge difference?

Crystal has always been my go-to. In fact, getting a windshield tomorrow from them.
Just for grins I asked the dealer how much, as I was going to be there anyway. They were $550 and don't even do it themselves. Crystal is $295
    Never an issue with quality.

Most low quality glass will not calibrate properly and will render those features useless. Of course there are exceptions and depends on multiple factors but I would stick with OEM for those cars.

Even a $20K Corolla comes with a single camera for auto brake, and will be a standard feature by 2022 for all North American cars, I assume windshield quality gotta improve going forward.

I worked for windshield surgeons when I was in high school and my job was to go pick up customer cars from dealerships and drop them off at windshield surgeons. So yeah pretty much all dealers use whatever windshield that windshield surgeons/cal alta/crystal glass uses and then they upcharge. If you request oem glass, then that is a different story.

The only manufacturer that supplied us with glass was Volvo.

Cal-Alta had the cheapest windsheid for my Silverado. Called today, got it replaced today, and am happy.
That will make selling this truck easier, and well worth the $189.

after a saga trying to get oem glass on my f150, i ended up going to cal-alta for the $200 windshield (i think like 230- there's an upcharge for lane-keep-assist glass) and I couldn't be happier. Cannot tell the difference between it and the other two OEM windshields I've run. +1 would recommend.

untrue at least in my anecdotal experience. I was frustrated that Glassmasters insisted on a $150-200 "calibration fee" for something that takes five minutes with an amazon OBD2 scan tool.
