Fuuuuuuuuuu deals so tempting, $450 from PEI to Kauai or $430 from PEI to Kona....fucking cheaper than flying PEI to Calgary. Have been to Oahu and Kauai before, checking out Kona is tempting but loooooooove Kauai.
There is nothing special in Kona really, it's just the dry side of Hawaii and probably the most developed. The Hilo side of Hawaii is where most of the really lush/scenic stuff is. The active volcano is in the South and Mauna Kea is kind of in the middle. I love Hawaii though, the only island I like more is Kauai - never gets old.

Do it. Kona/big island has a lot to offer. You can see dense green jungle on the east side, and arid desert/lava flow on the west, and everything in between.

What part of the big island would you guys recommend staying in? For the sake of scoping out airbnb options

I suggest staying in Waikoloa, it's extremely nice and very reasonably priced. The best beaches are also along that strip of highway, so you're 10-15 minutes from several prime beaches. You could stay in Kona too but it's way busier there and a lot less "Hawaii like". I've stayed in both, Waikoloa is way better IMHO, its like an oasis in the lava rock. The whole West side of the island is the dry side, so you're covered there. Waikoloa is also very well connected to the saddle road, which takes you to Mauna Kea and on to Hilo if you go all the way. If you want to explore the while island, that is the best location IMO. There aren't as many AirBnb's in Hawaii in general, you will probably have better luck through VRBO or a private Hawaii rental agency, but YMMV. Some times we found the same property on AirBnb and a private rental site and it was a lot cheaper privately.

I just bought flights to Maui, crazy good deal right now, paid $558/return per person. Haven’t paid these prices in years. This was with Air Canada.

Brad if you're on Facebook, follow YYC Deals (Calgary). Hawaii seems to come up often-ish.

    For what month?

A good deal in Jan/Feb is $380 or so via YVR and $430 or so direct. A little while ago there was also a sale for a bunch of months in 2019 for $4XX to Maui. My last 3-4 times to Hawaii were all under $500pp, just got to jump on those deals haha.

I held back on yolo'ing and going in the next few months as it would be a bit rushed and any of the good/decent rentals were all scooped up already. But it did revamp my urge to go back, booked a rental for 2 weeks on Kauai for next February.

that's pretty good price for summer.

a new site that I've recently learned about is
    https://www.secretflying.com/canada-deals/

I check the US and Canada deal from time to time, they had a <700$ deal from Vancouver to Maldives.

That’s just it, we always have to book our condo at least 6 months in advance, so flights are always booked around accommodations.

I could have gotten even better rates, but I’m forced to specific dates.

For summer though, I haven’t seen rates this good in 10+years

Yeah that's one of the joys of booking a Hawaii trip, folks plan and book things super far out. The rental I booked is booked up for March and April of 2020 so I pulled the trigger for February.

I booked the rental starting on a Thursday, hoping to be able to find a flight deal which usually cater to flying on mid-week days.

I wonder if Hawaii will get hit with any Hurricanes this year?

We just missed it last year. In fact our flight was bumped to a morning direct flight home because of it.
