Default Leaving for another job but still want bonus

The bonus at my company gets paid out on February 28th where you have to be an active employee on that day to receive your bonus.

I want to refrain from asking HR but if I were to get another position and submit my two weeks notice on February 15th for example I would still be an active employee. I have heard that some companies, if leaving for the competition, will let you go right away. I think that means they send you home but you're still an active employee?

    Anyone come across this situation?

If that's a meaningful amount of money, don't submit your resignation until the money is in your bank account. Don't leave any room for interpretation.

It depends on the company, and I don't want to generalize - but if your notice period is during the time of payment you should be fine.

Don't give them any reason not to pay it out. Resign as soon as its deposited, but not a day sooner.

Yeah, we are in the same boat. Quitting wave always comes on March 1st. Nobody want to rock the boat until money is in their account. But we were also pretty good in paying out pro-rated bonus but some people just want to be sure and no funny math for quitting early. Really depends on the opportunities you have lined up next, if you can't wait, don't wait.

Why even risk it? Delay the start date of your next job if you have to.

just finished a second interview and it sounds like they would prefer an earlier start date. I might not even get it but I need to plan my exit in case.

If they really want you, may be they are willing to either wait or go for a signing bonus?

If leaving to the competition they will likely walk you out right then and there. You may get a small payout in lieu of your final two weeks you were willing to give them but I wouldn't count on it. Your employment would be terminated as of the day they walk you out. If the money is meaningful then wait it out.

Once you tender your resignation, the company can pay you out the length of notice and that'll be it for your employment there.

My company has bonuses tied in quarterly. So we see people quitting jan and April which is after bonuses are paid. There's always significant money left on the table when a long term employee leaves.

Not sure there's a solution for it.

Suppose you could take your vacation days/sick days and if you can take a short unpaid leave of absence until your bonus is paid. Could give you time to work the new job if you think they won't find out.
