    FYI,

I believe Thi Thi Subs has now reopened as of last week.

Go help a local business and fellow Beyonder out!

FYI, they sold out the last 3 days before 3 pm. Good to see the support they've been getting.

Thi Thi after 11:30 is a rookie mistake. EXCEPT for that usually the rib isn’t ready yet and it’s the best sub.

That place is good but lunch hour is over by the time you're through the lineup. Probably a lot better now that DT is quiet, get em while you can haha.

Word. One time I was there for lunch. Long line up as usual. That.Guy.S30's dad went to the back of the line and escorted a senior lady to the front and served her next

That's good to know. I probably would have waited until after that to grab a sub for dinner.

It's not on the menu, but they also have a beef and rib sub. That's what double-meat sub dreams are made of.

Bringing an old thread back, but I figured my question fit in:

Have you been successful at supporting local?

I haven't. And I have a good recent example to explain why.

The new truck needs new winter tires. As a small business owner, I know quite a few tire shops that I have worked with over the years. So I ask them all, here is my tire size, I want studded, give me a full price studded and installed.

I expect no discount, just a fair price. I'll even be happy to pay a premium for the convenience of them having stock and just being able to roll in and out in a hour or so.

No luck. Either no stock (lolwut) or the pricing is absurdly higher than ordering other name brands online. To the tune of about $400 overpriced.

So what do you do? Do you pay an extra $400 for no better service rendered? And even the possibility of an inferior tire? I did not specify brand as I trust a tire shop to know what to suggest. At my business, no one pays me a 30% premium to support me. They buy because the pricing, product and service is good.

Another even more straightforward example; wanted some floor pamps to brighten up the living room. Could have bought off of Amazon for cheapeat price, delivered via prime.

Instead, ordered through Home Depot to at least keep some of the money local. Now the lamps still haven't arrived for in store pickup days later.

So what is a person to do? You pay more money for inferior service, but in order to cause the market to change, you support services that take money out of the local economy and will likely kill off those jobs ever coming back.

    Feels like a lose/lose situation.

Well I can't speak for any other tires stores, but if the cost difference on a set of the same four tires online is $400 different than it is available for locally, I would be out of the game because unless we are talking $800 per tire tires, I don't even get to make a $100 a tire on anything period let alone trying to cover that kind of difference. I can't say sometimes an online business is blowing stuff out because they got stuck with old inventory or an item is discontinued etc so the odd specific item can have a huge variance, but that much price variance is not the norm with tires online versus a store locally (or at least my store). I deal with it every day and while I lose the odd sale, I don't lose many. Then again, I am not trying to beat online prices. I sell for what I have to sell for and not go broke. I try and get and keep customers by being good at what I do, and when people understand it isn't just a product they are buying, and they have an experience that needs personal attention from somebody who knows a thing or two rather than just being an order taker, they come around and stick around. No business survives long term simply by gouging just as no business will ever survive being the cheapest always.

As for inventory, yes, things are really fucked this year, especially on any of the less common and oddball sizes. Covid fucked a lot of production up so anything that doesn't sell huge volumes got pushed to the back of the production lines in favour of the more common stuff that sells hand over fist. You also had a shit ton of tire manufacturers trying to predict how the season would be and nobody knew for sure. Some gambled at lower production to save spending capital that is needed elsewhere to survive if the year was totally flat, while others ramped up because maybe they had some extra capital banked and knew they could float the extra inventory if the risk didn't pan out.

It isn't a normal year for any of us.

If your business relies on your customers wanting to support you because you are local, then your business model is not viable. That's just charity.
@tirebob is a good example of the opposite of that. I go to Bob because I trust his knowledge on the subject, so I don't have to spend any time/resources thinking about it. I can just trust his recommendation, and I know the price will be fair or better than fair. Bob knows he isn't selling tires, he's selling service.

People think Amazon is killing things because they sell so cheap - I think that's incorrect. I think they sell things because of their service.

Agree about both Urban Expressions and Amazon. Both thrive because of service. Amazon is rarely the cheapest source of things.

Amazon's delivery service is a huge benefit. In fact, I actively complain when they ship Canada Post because it ruins the benefits of Amazon

There's really only 2 ways a store can compete - price and service. Many local places in Calgary don't seem to understand either, so people turn to online stores. I always try to support local but some places make it REALLY hard...

Also, places like Amazon employ a lot of local people for warehouse and delivery, so buying from them helps ensure those jobs stay around for the Calgarians that need them.
