A lot of older people just need a job for health benefits. Either for themselves or their spouse. Drugs aren't cheap.
Also with their 4 weeks vacation and some have option to purchase 2 more (Devon). Why not stick on payroll? Basically working part time if you allocate it correctly with long weekends and designated days off.

Company did big group of laid off March 23, temporary till May 25. ... On the 21st, about 80% of those laid off, got the permanent lay off calls.
This is what I'm afraid of. I'm on temporary layoff until whatever 60 days is from April 26, and I worry that they'll just push me the rest of the way out the door when that time comes.

The smart thing to do, unless I'm missing something obvious, is to rotate layoffs. Bring all us temporary guys back, and park another group of guys for 2 months. Then if it's still slow, rotate another bunch of guys into layoffs. Then you've always got a certain number of guys on payroll, a certain number off, you still have access to all your talent, and your guys aren't stressed more than necessary. I don't think my company would do that but that's what I would do.

Would that affect your EI/CERB eligibility though? Can you go on CERB for 2 months, back to work, then try to get back on CERB?

I'd imagine CERB is a one time thing but I don't know. For EI I think you need a certain amount of hours and a certain income to qualify, or something like that.

After their CEO “stepped down”, I wouldn’t want to be working at Vermillion for the next while.
I know you put "stepped down" in quotes so you implied firing but you're pretty much right. They blame him for a lot of stuff. I've actually heard the subsequent reshuffling since then has filtered down to lots of the guys I know and they are being given new opportunities that they are excited for.

It will be interesting to see how it all comes out in the wash. But they just hired a new production engineer soooo

4 weeks plus 2 purchased plus 12 flex plus 12 stat. Man those were the days. I've never beaten that high water mark.
Had some of my highest earning years there too. What a combo! Actual dollars per hour was incredible.

I think this is one of the better ways of doing things after you've already had to cut the ~15% dead wood. You've got people left that you want to keep but you don't have enough work for them. Rather than demoralize them with this horse shit "do more with less" MBA-speak and cut their pay, it's better to cut their hours so that at least they get some time on their own when you're not paying them rather than still trying to grind 40+hr/week out of someone when you decide you're only going to pay them for 32.

It still sucks and it's not sustainable in the long term, but it's a viable option that may help an employer weather a storm.

Overall I like the idea of working less and getting paid slightly less. I think its starting to become clear that a lot of jobs that went away due to COVID are not coming back ever, so society has to live in a world with people becoming more educated but no jobs available for them. I like the idea that was floated aroudn in the news the past few days about converting to 4 day work weeks. Pay a bit less for the reduced hours, but if the work is still there and the company is profitable, they can hire someone else which creates a job and also makes everyone else less stressed with the extra day off.

Very interesting move that they brought back some of their 'Old Guard' with Curits Hicks and Lorenzeo Donadeo.. Only time will tell if it works.

Hearing that Arc is doing some consolidating of their privates.

Substantially everyone at rifle shot was canned yesterday, with them and another co getting absorbed by a bigger private.

Well it’s now public what came of this, Longshore absorbing RS, Steelhead, and Primavera.

All the same owner, just cutting down on dead weight between the three ( 1 management team instead of 4)

Also BP is cutting 15% of workforce worldwide. Probably not a big effect on Calgary though.

    Apparently this represents 10,000 jobs.

Departing management teams probably get a nice parting gift for running less successful companies.

OP on reddit says "So far I've heard at least 90, in areas from HR to accounting. Seems like they are getting rid of mid level management."

Bunch of teachers etc apparently laid off in Edmonton. Please move if there is better thread.

Now just scroll through this terrible article and only look at the 3 pictures. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmon...ions-1.5606425

Even the pictures show the bias!! Short of drawing horns on the first two, I don't know what more they could do!

Administration and government are evil, teacher is wholesome. Yup, that checks out.

Unrelated, but does that teacher look like she's twins with nearly every other teacher in every school?
