Exactly, it’s a nightmare for supervisors and managers. If the person came to work (per core day policy), they likely wouldn’t be leaving to undertake an even higher risk by heading to the mountains.

Don’t get me wrong, if it’s unsafe to get to work - please stay off the roads.

In the before times, today would be a normal Calgary get to work day - no?
I can't speak for anyone else; but in the times before the few odd days a year that the weather was truly crap I had the flexibility to work from home that day if I so chose. That said in those days every other day I was in the office (or site), so the one or two odd days I wasn't didn't really matter.

In before times, people would get in by 9am if they're lucky, yack about how shit the roads are, then an hour lunch and leave at 3pm to 'beat the traffic'. They'd be lucky to get 4 hours of work done.

I feel like this statement is just making problems out of things. In the before times, I would just take a flex* if I wanted to use the day to ski (dependent on what was going on that day re: meetings or time-sensitive work). Doesn't really matter whether i'm WFH or in-office; how I choose to use my flex time and whatever risks I take during that time is my own decision - has no implication for the company. not really a "nightmare" in my opinion.

Agreed. I should have clarified my context - biases are a major challenge. If someone on the team made the trek to get to work, then found out a co worker had decided to stay home and then left for the ski hill, it can create a ton of friction if the managing person doesn’t somehow address it.

This is hypothetical, but people are people. And teams are difficult to manage.

Managing teams is hard, WFH didn't make it easier. Don't think that's the employees problem.

That's my last two years. Gym in the a.m, roll in around 9am, do some clacky clacky, hour lunch, more clacky and leave around 3-3:30.

That sounds like the bitchy co-workers problem for going into the office in the first place. We're adults, and we can make adult decisions after considering the factors. If work karen is pissed I took a half day, that's a her problem, not a me problem, and certainly not my bosses problem.

Yeah, in my scenario the person didn’t drive into the office in the morning (because snow) only to drive to the mountains later.

    That’s the concern.

    Good dialogue.

I'd rather drive to the mountains than downtown.

If the worker asked to do a half day and their supervisor said its fine then who cares. People should enjoy their days off.

However if they just blew off work and afterwards said it was a half day then they should be disciplined no different than just skipping work in general. WFH being part of it doesn't really make it better or worse.

One thing is the utilities is on the employee now which can be material when you are at home all day.
Power on, tv on, cooking on stove, running washer/dryer, showering after Peloton.

Power on? What, do you just disconnect the power and gas to your home when you're out?

For me, wfh is considerably cheaper compared to cost of commuting, buying coffee, buying lunch, etc.

Most of us are going to transition to a 4 day work week over the next 5 years so you old geezers can stick by your 5 day in the office rules all you want. Work smart, not long.
