Requirement 1 of joining is letters of recommendation from multiple members, who you know is defined as important from step one. From there movement through the tiers is entirely arbitrary and decided by a board based on “ a number of different factors “. FWIW I’m not criticizing anything here, so no need to be defensive, just outlining how it is from the documentation presented directly by them in writing and coloured by what friends in the club have mentioned is the process as well as some preliminary discussions I have had with their membership staff.

As ExtraSlow said this is all by design, itÂ’s the whole point of a private social club. Joining the Glencoe isnÂ’t a meritocracy, itÂ’s a social club curated to a certain kind of person and what they want the social experience at the club to be like. The whole thing falls apart if they start admitting members the current membership doesnÂ’t like,

The posted entrance fees do the heavy lifting in this regard.

the whole tier system is an extensive interview to join the club.

    Patently false

I donÂ’t think this is nessecarily a bad thing either, nor is it corrupt, end of the day itÂ’s a private club offering an experience their members want and are willing to pay for. Calling the entrance process corrupt, corruption implies inherent dishonesty, nothing about the Glencoe nor its goals are dishonest.

Posting guidelines for entrance for prospective and wait listed members, but following a different set of guidelines for admission as you have inferred is by definition corrupt.

Some people like it some people donÂ’t. Even within this thread there are tons of people who love the club, hate the club, are curious about the club and want to join, and would never consider joining. Nothing wrong with that.

    Does that answer your question?
Not trying to be argumentative. I am familiar with the process and the club does not in anyway acknowledge that certain applications receive arbitrary or discretionary priory over others. If you have any evidence beyond anecdote that is in conflict with the clubs stated entrance requirements, I am genuinely interested. This would be dishonest and corrupt.

With respect to letters, there are several thousand members. If you're interested in joining, you can find 2 people to write you reference letters. This is not a difficult threshold to meet for the vast majority.

You're still not listing the conveniences you'd be gaining over your current situation unless a larger home is somehow more convenient. Not being able to see your neighbor isn't really a convenience, having to now plow your own driveway really isn't a convenience. You'd probably have to drill for water and then ensure said water is continuously safe and also have a septic system, not all that convenient either.

Don't get me wrong here, there are people who quite like acreage/rural life - tirebob is one of them. But there are trade offs and conveniences will be one of them - not seeing your neighbor and having a larger home are not conveniences, they are lifestyle choices. Your kids being able or walk to school versus them being drive is a convenience.

Being able to walk 5 minutes to a pub/restaurant versus drive for 15-20 minutes or longer is a convenience. Being able to drive 5 minutes to the nearest grocery/hardware store versus 15-20 minutes or longer is a convenience. Convenience is about saving time and money and acreages/rural life will only do that if you're willing to become somewhat of a self reliant recluse. Oh, and don't fool yourself by saying Home Depot is on the way home - if you're at home and need something at Home Depot then it is all of a sudden not on the way home which is inconvenient.

You almost sound like my one aunt who lives on an acreage by herself, doesn't want to know or see any of her neighbor's, finds fault with everything in the world today, is generally just an angry person. She is not fun to be around and then gets upset because people do not want to be around her or help her out in her times of need. Now I suppose she has what she believes to be her little slice of heaven on earth but i jsut can not imagine going through life being so angry at the world and being so reclusive.

    Haha

    I’m nothing like your aunt.

I think most who actually know me, understand.

Can any place not in the inner SW be considered prestigious?

You conveniently forgot to add 8 more minutes and that's one way. 4 round trips a day and that's an hour out of your day not to mention extra gas money, extra wear and tear on your vehicle, extra scotch drank to relieve frustration from having to deal with more idiot drivers during those extra 8 minutes.

And Aspen/West Springs has everything? No Canadian Tire/Lowes/Home Depot/Rona in either of those communities. Are you just planning to have everything shipped to your doorstep that you might buy at one of those places?

I haven’t been to any of those stores you have mentioned in years haha.

    Amazon Prime!

8 min to and 8 min back for groceries, yes please.

I think your idea of convenience and mine are much different.

Speedogs point is you complained about the inconvenience of being less than 5 minutes away from anything in Britannia, but then go on to say 8 minutes isn't inconvenient.

My wife wants to build in Britannia but the only problem with that area is the lack of stores near by, it blows.

I’d rather have 4 acres west of the city.

Simple observation but it unfortunately appears that any thread Brad starts eventually turns into a pissing match about money.

Speedogs posts make it seem like he's never heard of Springbank. It's closer than lots of actual suburbs to any amenities you could think of. Canadian Tire, Lowes, and Costco are probably the most inconvenient.. but the first two are like a 10 min drive and Costco is the worst at 21 min (according to google maps right now).

Our endgame will be moving out there (if we don't leave for the USA in the next 10 years).

Also, to whoever said Brittania is for new money, that's simply not true.

That's only because he's got all the money and we all have none.

On the bright side, I love the personalities here.

I'm not a fan of Glenmore, but Elbow wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have that massive playground zone in Elbow Park.

Conveniences change over time. When I first bought in Arbour Lake, it was the convenience of crowfoot, lake access in the summer mid day when working from home, or even working at the lake, as well as quick commute to work. Later on in life in my bachelor years, it wasn’t convenient at all as I spent most of my time downtown partying, considered moving downtown for a bit. Now, it’s all about maximizing time with kids activities with a hectic work schedule and it’s perfect. Spent 2 hours every night this week with the neighborhood kids playing hockey at the lake with ours. Can’t get that anywhere else. Once the kids grow up this won’t be desirable for me anymore.
