    Default New cigarette packaging

I'm not a smoker, never have been and most likely never will but wow, the new packaging rules are taking everything to a new level. Sure isn't like it was in the 70's or 80's, even advertising in magazines and on the television...

It doesn't matter any more. People who smokes are used to it. People who don't has switched to vaping.

I've always acknowledged that massive irony of her name and cause of death. You can't write this shit sometimes.

Side note, they should put morbidly obese fat people on boxes of Lucky Charms and bottles of Coke instead of in Sephora commercials. Maybe some diseased livers or black eyes on whiskey bottles?

Current smokers won't care - they already have huge warnings on the boxes, this isn't going to change anything.

I'm biased because I despise cigarettes, but I'd like to see taxes go way up on them too. I also support sugar tax and similar things. Then give the money to healthcare.

Got to love the nanny state. Don’t worry, whatever it is you are into is sure to be next.

Yup, as a smoker it doesn't make me feel either way, I don't need the labelling to tell me how fucking stupid smoking is

As for taxes, can't say much in defense of smoking but they are already taxed up the ass to the point that I think they basically cover the care of lung cancer. Most of the cost of smokes are taxes.

I've noticed a massive shift to not smoking in the companies I work in over the last 10 years. In our office of 100 people theres only 2 guys who smoke. I go out to industrial sites all the time and the last few I've been to noone smoked/vaped at all. I don't think anyone in my friends or extended friends group smokes either.

of the two guys that do smoke in my company both work in direct customer support (like helpdesk) roles. Maybe the stress of dealing with people all day long necessitates the need for them to step out of the office as often as possible. I remember in previous companies the majority of the helpdesk/call center staff would smoke.

I used to work in a place where the smokers got 2-3x as many 5 min breaks as the rest - so instead of complaining, I started casual smoking (but not inhaling really) instead with them .... haha (haven't done this in 20 years)

On the tax note, Alberta's new budget will see taxes on a carton of cigarettes go up $5 to $55. How much does a carton cost retail right now for an average brand (is there such a thing)?

Now there's also GST as well as the federal excise tax ($24.38) that would be on top of Alberta's provincial excise tax. Some charts I've happened upon put the tax amount in Alberta to just over 2/3's of the total retail price including taxes.

Darts are already so incredibly expensive that I can't see how a young kid could afford to start smoking and that's allegedly been the goal with all this taxation. I think they're over $15/pack now! This packaging thing seems silly but whenever the cigar package/band deletion comes in, we'll be at #FullRetard.

"Thank Jeebus we can FINALLY put a stop to all these children I keep seeing with a $25 Cuban cigar hanging out of their mouth! It's epidemic! Children smoking expensive, luxurious cigars, everywhere! Forcing cigars to be sold in plain boxes with no labels and even replacing the cigar bands with plain bands will immediately end the problem."

I thought the goal was to decrease the amount of smokers in order to put less pressure of tobacco related illness on the health system. I think they still have a ways to go in order to really affect it, for example a single packet of 25 cigarettes in New Zealand costs around $39 NZ dollars with a carton costing around $300 or more

Yes, that's the goal but virtually the only way to accomplish that is to prevent kids from starting, let a decade pass and there will be WAY fewer smokers.
Existing smokers can't seem to quit and price doesn't motivate them. Price motivates people with little money (kids) to make it too difficult to start smoking.

Lets be realistic. We're pushing 120$ cartons.

All this does is feed the black market. What is a carton of indian smokes running - 40$? We long ago crossed that point of negative returns...

I still want to know why cannabis taxes werent also boosted?

because tobacco is bad and marijuana is good.
Because cannabis has medicinal benefits? That's all I can think of.

Theres more and more articles daily showing the lack of evidence.

When you start weeding out the crap with bogus methodology... The evidence keeps getting weaker as anything but a narcotic.
